Coach Finstock crossed his arms tightly to his chest at Scott. "Speaking of, um, losers, where's your, uh, where's your little protege?"

Scott looked around the field filled with lacrosse players, scanning for his beta. "Um..."

"'Um'? Is... Is 'um' a location? Is 'us' behind me?"

With her werewolf hearing, Y/N heard the conversation between her older brother and her lacrosse coach. She wanted to strangle her best friend for not showing up to practice on time, again.

"I'll go find him," Y/N whispered, only for Scott to hear. He nodded, signaling her to go.

"Little McCall!" Coach Finstock called out as he saw Y/N jogging off the field. "Where the hell are you going?!"

"Umm, bathroom." She hesitated, wishing she had come up with a better lie.

"Practice just started!"

Y/N let out a frustrated sigh; ready to kill Liam for the excuse she was about to use knowing it would work. "Sorry! Time of the month! Gotta go!"

Coach Finstock shivered in disgust as she took off towards the locker room. He looked back at Scott.

"He'll be here. Okay?" Scott started explaining. "He's the backbone of this team. He's stepped it up in every way possible. A born leader who can handle anything you throw at him."

Y/N walked into the boys' locker room, only to see Liam laying down on the bench, completely heartbroken. "I can't handle this."

"You have got to be kidding me," she mumbled under her breath.

"Yes, you can," Mason answered Liam. "And you've handled so much worse than this. You're practically the Alpha now."

Y/N grabbed Liam's practice jersey from his locker as he continued to whine. "I'm nothing without her."

The words shattered Y/N's heart. She was in love with her best friend and he was too oblivious to noticed because he was too hung up on Hayden.

"Liam, can you help me with this, please?" Corey asked as he struggled to put on Liam's shoulder pads on Liam.

"Hayden left me," Liam said sadly.

"That's it! I'm done!" Y/N snapped as she threw Liam's jersey at Mason's chest, unable to take the pain that pierced through her heart every time Liam talked about Hayden. She had been with him the second Hayden left because he needed his best friend, but that was almost three months ago.

"I can't do this anymore," she turned on her heel and headed for the door.

Corey and Mason looked at each other, knowing exactly what that was about. Everyone knew Y/N was in love with Liam. It was obvious. They knew she was also hurting this summer listening to Liam complain about missing Hayden, her pick up the pieces, and wiping the tears away every night he cried in her arms. She could only take so much and they were surprised she lasted this long.

"What do you mean you're done?" Liam asked as he got up and reached for her wrist, turning her around to face him. "You can't leave me either."

"Newsflash, Liam! She didn't leave you! She moved to protect her sister and it's not like she dumped you or anything. There's a difference. I wouldn't be surprised if she's just as whiny and mopey as you."

"Y/N-"

"No," she interrupted and continued her rant. She had kept everything bottled up, and now, she was ready to let everything out. "I'm sick and tired of you moping around over Hayden all summer long and I sure as hell ain't going to stick around to hear it for it the rest of our senior year."

"You wouldn't understand. You've never been in love before. You don't know what it's like."

Y/N stumbled back and pulled her wrist out of Liam's hold. Liam noticed a flash of hurt across her face. She held her gaze with his, ignoring the warm tears forming in her eyes. "Yes I do, but you know what? You fall in love more than once." She repeated the words she heard her mother tell Scott when he didn't have Allison as his anchor after their break up.

Liam watched her walk out of the locker room as her words stung. Although he no longer had a girlfriend and was heartbroken over the break up, this somehow hurt more. He wanted to run after her and fix it. He didn't want to lose her when he was about to lose everyone else.

Liam turned around to look at Mason and Corey, who looked absolutely devastated for Liam, but more for Y/N. They didn't need to have werewolf senses to know she was hurting.

"What was that about?" Liam whispered, too scared to know the answer.

"Straight boys can be stupid," Corey mumbled.

Mason shook his head in disagreement, "Liam can be stupid," he corrected before he heard his phone beeped. He pulled it out of his pocket and read the message out loud. "Coach is making Diaz captain."

The boys rushed out of the locker room. Liam wasn't going to let this go. He would talk to Y/N during practice, if not, afterwards. He had to make this right. He wasn't going to lose his best friend.
