Rapunzel

I woke up at 7:00 am. It's my usual morning line-up. I stretched out and looked around, still a bit sleepy. I took a glamsp of my self-painted calendar and read today's date: Mother will be visiting!

"Oh no!" I screamed and quickly ran towards my dress closet. If Mother would be coming here today, everything had to be spottless! I changed into my favourite dress: a purple A-line with ropes in the front and the back and a high waist. With the duster in my hand, I attacked every piece of dust that I saw so that everything would be at least dust-free. Mother hates dust in house. Or actually, tower.

Yes, I live in a tower, yes I live here all alone and yes, I am just eleven years old. But that didn't mean I was lonely! I had my chameleon, Pascal, to talk to, and I kept myself buzzy with painting, making little dresses for Pascale, pots and candles, and I read. A lot. Mother brought new books with her every time, but there can never be enough books for me! Why I couldn't go out and buy books by myself? Because the world is dangerous. There were vampires everywhere, and you could hurt yourself to poisoned plants! And also, there was no door and I couldn't go out.

When I was done cleaning my tower room, I sat down at my window and brushed my hair. And brushed. And brushed. And brushed. I brushed my hair until I heard a funny sound coming my way.

"Pascal, are you doing that?" I asked Pascal, but he didn't even hear me say it. He peacefully slept on my lap and didn't hear weird sounds.

I stood up, on which Pascal fell down on the floor, and I leaned out the window. I thought the sound came from there. I heared the sound again, a whooshing of wings, maybe. I leaned out even farther and then I saw an owl, flying right at me. Screaming, I ran inside, putting Pascal on my head on the way. I didn't want him to get hurt by that thing. I looked back and saw the owl flying in the tower, following me as I ran in cirkles. Then I got a thought. Isn't it that some wild animals can't see you anymore when you don't move? I didn't know if it worked with owls, but at least I could try.

I tried to stand still and I saw the owl slowing down. He stopped right in front of me and dropping a letter. Hold on- a letter? Are owls supposed to do that? I wanted to pick it up, but I should not do that. The bird might wanted to attack me again!

The owl gave me a shrill scream and flied away. Pheeuf! That was just in time! He might have eaten me if I hadn't think of that!

"Let's see what's in the letter!" I said to Pascal and walked to the kitchen. There was always a frying pan waiting for me, in case of emergency. And this was an emergency. With the pan, I pushed the letter to the left. Nothing happened. I pushed it to the right. Nothing happened.

"No bomb then, I suppose?" Carefully, I lifted the letter with my fingertips and holded it out to Pascal.

"What do you think, then?" I saw pascal sniffing it and then backing away.

"Okay, I'll open it!" He looked at me, shocked.

"Oh, Pascal, if you don't want to do it I'll do it. Somebody has to open the letter!" I could see he looked at me with a 'Are-you-kidding-me?' look and I smiled. Then, my attention was back on the envelope. I needed to read whatever is inside. When I looked closer, I saw my name, address and sleeping place written in green ink:

Rapunzel von Corona

The tower in the Valley

Tower room II

Weird. I didn't have a last name called Von Corona. But the rest of the description was so neat I believed immediately!

"I think they just got my last name wrong!" I said to Pascal and hoped that 'they' were like Mother, nice and warm. I opened the envelope and saw that there were two letters inside. I picked out the first one and read it out loud to Pascal:
