Somewhere Along the Road
Jack
You know that one moment
when you know you’ve met
someone that’s absolutely
terrible?
I’m not having that moment.
I’m not having it at all with
this guy. He’s got a name.
Justin.
I’ve suddenly found that
I’m taking advantage of
a guy whose genuinely
nice.
I’ll admit, it makes me feel
bad when I do stuff like
this. People don’t deserve
this.
So, what’s your name?
Justin takes his eyes off
of the road for a second,
smiling.
I had been looking out
of the passenger’s side
window moments before.
“Jack.”
Idiot. You just told him
your full name! He may
be able to turn you in
now.
I probably should have
given him an alias,
but I just couldn’t do
it.
That’s a nice name.
Have ya enjoyed
living in Austin,
Jack?
Lying to this guy just
didn’t feel right to
me, but it was safe.
“Yeah.”
That’s good. I like
it there, too. I’ve
lived there all my
life.
There’s nothing
I like more than
being close to
home.
Home. The word
had a painful
pang to it that I
hated.
Back home, Ace
was probably
being abused.
Ace…
I missed my sister.
We were twins,
but we were
separated.
“Yeah,” I said. “I
home with my
family.”
He turned to me
again. Don’t
we all miss
home?
I nodded. “I
guess so.
Some just
don’t.”
Justin nodded.
It’s better though.
Home doesn’t mean
loneliness.
For some reason,
I liked this guy.
I liked him a
lot.
And somehow, I
felt like I’d met
a new friend
somewhere along the road.
