CHAPTER 17
—————————
NIGHTMARES

The rest of the night didn't go to well in the Barton household... at least for the two siblings clashing over promises.
Sydney refused to leave her room despite Lila and Laura coming in to tell her dinner was ready.

No.
The girl was upset... actually... angry with her brother. He made promises, promises he promised to keep, then broke them. She had a reason to be cross with him.
She had reasons to not answer anyone who asked her to come downstairs. She didn't want to talk to her brother or even heard what he wanted to say!

"Sydney?" Clint called from the other side of the door, his fist constantly knocking again the hard wood of the door. He knew how upset his sister was as soon as he got home (and after checking the time)—especially after she didn't come down for dinner and Lila and Laura asked her to. He caused her to be like this just from his ignorance. He made promises to her and only seemed to break them.
"Can we talk? I need to explain myself..."

Sydney slowly raised her head from pillow toward the sound of the noise from her brother. She made no effort to move to him. Why would she have to? He didn't need to explain himself... Sydney already knew why he was late: he forgot.

"Sydney, please..." he begged.

Sydney softly sighed, a bit of guilt rising in her. She swung her feet to the side of her bed, contemplating if she actually would open the door.
Did she want to?
After another second of thought, she hopped onto the floor and toward the door to open it to her brother.
She did... He deserved a little explanation even though she probably knew what he was going to say. She said she wasn't going to... but her heart wouldn't let her ignore him.
But the door only opened where Sydney could see out of, not enough for the man to come in.

"Can we talk in your room?" He asked softly.

"Talk here." Sydney responded with her arms crossed, trying to stay firm.

"Okay." Clint agreed. He took a deep breath before he begun to speak, "So... I want to apologize for leaving you hanging like that... and I know I've done this some much recently but it's because I get busy and forget the time... not because I'm forgetting about you. I want to spend time with you... maybe we can plan something else.. okay?"

Silence loomed over the two siblings as neither wanted to say another word. Sydney thought trying to understand her brother's point.
When she opened her mouth to speak again, Clint smiled at her, hoping she'd be okay with everything.
Sydney returned the smile with fake one before closing the door on her brother's face.
"Real talk. We really talk more in the morning." She spoke through the door.
