In the end I borrowed a black top from Maggie, against my will. It was a draped off-shoulder top which ended just beneath my belly button, thank god. I wore my own jeans which I've owned for several years, I get attached too easily. Maggie had forced me to wear a dark shade of lipstick and heavy eyeliner. I couldn't comprehend why we had to dress up this much for a game. Maggie herself wore a purple frilly skirt and grey keyhole top. We meet up with Nath in the girls common room. She stood leaning against the wall in shiny black slimming trousers. Matched with black split-sleeves top. She wore even heavier make up than I did. Her long hair was gathered in a simple ponytail.
"Looking hot, girlfriend." Maggie exclaimed when she saw her.
"Likewise." Nath grinned.
"You too, Quinn." She continued and eyed me.
"Isn't it nice going to a game in your first week!" Maggie couldn't contain herself. Both Nath and I watched her with affection. We weren't the only ones leaving the dormitory all dolled up. Once we left we didn't make our way towards school but towards the senior dorms. Nath explained that the game grounds were placed a bit isolated since by passers had been hurt near the previous game grounds. We reached our destination and there were already a lot of people gathered. A large sand ground appeared to be the game area. It was enclosed by a simple wood fence. By either side of the ground two wooden poles were placed forming a goal. Students had gathered around the fence, all looking excited.
"Who's playing by the way?" Maggie asked Nath while we made our way towards a seemingly free space around the fence.
"You don't even know?" Nath answered with a question in surprise. Maggie just shrugged. Nath told us the members of the first team though I only recognised Leon's name and in the second team Dwight. My gaze drifted the area. It was rather an open space, lots of room for people, however most were close to each other. Some students were holding cans which I recognised from the dormitory's fridge.
"Oh, Joshua is playing?" Maggie questioned once Nath was done. Nath didn't answer but I noticed her nodding.
"I don't see Leon." I stated, not realising I've been looking for him.
"Oh, they'll come. Don't worry." Maggie reassured. A few minutes passed the sound of cheering was heard. Everyone's attentions were turned to a group of people dressed in blue followed by a group of people dressed in red. People cheered louder as the gates to the enclosure opened and the teams entered. We had apparently placed ourselves next to the entrance. They jogged passed us in their gear which seemed to been made out of leather, which only covered their upper chest. All players also wore the same type of gloves. I felt a pat on my shoulder as someone passed. My eyes darted and I noticed a Leon running backwards giving me a thumbs up. I smiled at him and mimicked his gesture. He then turned around and followed his team to the other side.
"Is that the only protection they get? Doesn't seem very helpful." I stated.
"Isn't that thrilling?" Maggie sounded overly excited.
"Don't know about that." I mumbled.
"Worried about my safety, sugar?" Someone spoke next to me and I turned to see Dwight who were putting on his gloves. I sighed and crossed my arms over my chest.
"I guess I should be worried since you're up against Leon." I said, sounding spiteful. Dwight didn't answer but I noticed him turning his body towards me. I swallowed nervously not knowing what to anticipate from him. Suddenly his hand had found my chin and forced me to look at him. He looked good, he looked excited.
"You underestimate me, sugar." He smirked. My heart skipped a beat which made me upset. Could my body stop betraying me? He let go and made his way unto the field. The gates closed and the teams found their positions. I received questioning looks from both Nath and Maggie but ignored them.
"By the way, may I ask what the purpose of the game is and perhaps the rules?" I questioned and turned towards them. Nath's gaze went towards Maggie.
"You didn't tell her?"
"It kind of slipped my mind." Maggie giggled. Nath sighed and got serious.
"It's kind of like handball." She begun and I nodded.
"Although it's more compelling to actually catch the ball with your hands." Nath continued.
"How so?" I asked, furrowing my eyebrows.
"The name burnball didn't appear out of nowhere. If the ball touches your body it will inflict an electric shock which will burn you." I swallowed.
"Why would they play such a dangerous game?" I questioned.
"The adrenaline of course!" Maggie interrupted. My gaze wandered over the field where the players had lined up in position. Someone appeared in the middle of the field holding a seemingly harmless ball, the size of an actual handball. However, he carried it with caution.
"What happens if the ball touches one of the spectators?" I asked worried. Nath pointed to steel pipes which were placed in every corner.
"They were activated once the gates were closed. They create a forcefield which turns the electricity within the ball off once it leaves the enclosure." She explained throughly to which I hummed and nodded in response. The one holding the ball placed a whistle at his lips and held it there. He then blew it and a ringing sound surrounded us, a second later he threw the ball up in the air and disappeared from his spot.
