Chapter 66 | Night Vision

After last night, I figured it was for the best to give Ryan some privacy. Of course, Chris was still there, but that was a little different. Regardless, I also wanted to see Kuza. After getting two bowls of oatmeal, I sat down beside him at the kitchen table. The others were around. Most my focus was on him though. He's still struggling with those basic daily things. Someone's usually there to help him, but I wish it could be me that was at his side. I've got so many other things on my plate right now.

Kuza's hands still shook terribly. He couldn't hold silverware very well, making it hard for him to eat. It's still surreal to see him this way. In my mind, I expect him to still be that ruthless killer I once knew. That half of him is gone now. He was getting so frustrated with simply trying to bring the spoon to his mouth. Angrily, he dropped it down in the bowl. The loud banging noise of it silenced the room. Great, yeah guys, it helps if you stare.

I glared at everyone in the kitchen, then turned my attention back to him. Setting my hand on his back, I tried my best to calm him down, "It's okay. Do you want help?"

"No!" He replied like a stubborn child.

My attention was drawn across the room as Ryan walked in. He didn't even look up from his tablet. Ryan grabbed an apple off the counter, continuing over to the table. How he managed to sit down without tripping over his own feet was beyond me. I leaned over and kissed Kuza's cheek. He was a little non-responsive. I understand how hard this has been on him but I wish he'd accept a little help.

"You know, normal people sleep in with their girlfriend after a romantic night." I told him.

"Can't have your cake and eat it too, Dev." He muttered, then completely changed the subject, "Come here and watch this."

Standing up, I walked around Kuza's chair over to Ryan's. I leaned over the back of it to watch the video he had pulled up on his tablet. It was security cam footage from the lab. By the date stamped in the corner, I knew it was today. He pressed play and what I saw next seemed like a terrible flashback to when Kuza was in solitary. Chris was walking around, yelling and screaming. He was scratching at his face and hitting his own head with his fist. It looked like he lost his damn mind.

Suddenly a table flew up in the air and the camera cut out. When it came back on a few moments later, I saw Ryan and Reese had gotten up to fix the situation.

"What the fuck was that?" I asked.

"Wait, it gets better." He replied, "There's an infrared camera set up in one corner of the lab in case the power ever goes out. Look what it caught."

He switched over to a different file. The same point in time, except everything was drenched in night vision. There was a second body in there with Chris. It floated though, like a ghost. The figure twirled around him, whispering into his ear. Then it threw the table up and flew towards the camera. That's when it cut out.

"What the fuck?" I whispered.

He started to rewind it and play it again. I heard Angelo's voice down the hall and slapped Ryan's tablet out of his hand. Ange has had it hard enough lately. I don't want him hearing his husband screaming like a mental patient. Ryan glared at me, then understood once Angelo walked in with Nikki.

"Is anyone in there with him now?" I asked.

"Yeah, Ashley and Jeremy are." He responded, "C'mon, we have a lot to get done today. Nikki, I could use some muscle, if you'd lend us a hand."

"I haven't even gotten to eat breakfast yet!" I replied.

"Yeah, neither have I." Nikki said.

Ryan tossed his apple core in the trash as he passed it. Josh had just finished pouring himself a cup of coffee. Before he had a change to drink from it, Ryan swiped it out of his hand. "Eat on the way down to the lab."
