CHAPTER TWENTY - FIVE

FLASHBACK CONTINUED

Thomas felt it difficult to breath. He had to sit down and so he did. He took his head in his hands and he almost wanted to cry but he contained himself as he didn't want to give Teresa and Aris the satisfaction of seeing him crying.

There was silence in the room. He got up from the bed and wanted to run away from it. Away from Teresa...

He started walking towards the door when Teresa started laughing. Thomas felt ashamed of himself, he had loved someone who made fun of him when he was heartbroken.

But the next thing he knew was that she was in his arms again. Aris was laughing as well.

He pushed her away from himself. "Teresa let's leave it..."

But she stopped him by putting a finger on his lips. "Tom. It was only a test."

Thomas didn't know what to say. He was so confused it almost made him sick.

"What...?" he tried to ask but couldn't pronounce the words coherently.

Then he knew why he couldn't form the words he wanted to speak. It was relief that made him this way.

Teresa didn't betray him. She didn't play with him. It was a test.

He felt just a little bit better and he hugged Teresa. He didn't care if Aris was watching them or not.

"But, why Teresa? What test?" he asked.

Teresa looked at him. "It's a bit long. But I'll try and explain it."

Thomas wanted to know. Desperately.

"So" Teresa started "do you know the trials we have made for the Gladers after they come out of the Maze?"

Thomas nodded.

"There is one test which you yourself have designed. The betrayal one."

Thomas nodded again. It was true. He had decided to include a test in the Scorch Trials in which one of the members of the Glade would betray him to see how his brain would react to it. He wouldn't have his memories then, so he wouldn't know that it is a test. He thought it was a really good way to read the brain patters they needed.

He had decided that after the trials he would get his memories back and so remember that it was a test and not hate the person who betrayed him.

Teresa continued  "Yeah, so WICKED has decided that I am going to be the one to betray you."

Thomas jumped. "What? No no no..."

"Yes Thomas" Aris interrupted. "That is why now we did this test. We've seen that Teresa is the person you care most about, so that will have a great impact on the real test in the Scorch."

It made sense. But Thomas thought that he would have Newt or Minho from the Glade to betray him. Not Teresa. He couldn't hate her.

"It's fine Thomas. You will get your memories back after that, so everything will be fine in the end." Teresa said.

"Are you sure? I don't want to hurt you in any way"

"I am sure Tom. I know that you would never hurt me. Just promise me that when the moment will come, you will remember that I only ever cared for you, Tom."

"I promise you Teresa. I will remember you."

"Then I am ready to be The Betrayer"
