--Chapter 3: Jessica Fitzgerald--
I opened my bedroom from the green yard and slipped inside. I silently moved into my secret room and morphed from my school identity- Emma Stevens- to my athletic, sports identity- Jessica Fitzgerald.
I redid my make-up- really dark mascara that brought my lashes out a lot and some sparkles on my lids. I put on my wig. It was a cute, curly-tipped, long, blonde one. I pulled on some yoga pants and my track shirt that said, “Allen D. Holmes High School” and had a picture of the mascot, a bear.
I snuck back outside and went to the front door of my house. I opened it and dramatically swung my backpack onto the floor. “Mom! I’m going off to Becca’s house!” I said, picking some random name off the top of my head.
“Have fun, hun,” she called from a different room. This way, she didn’t see me as Jessica. She has no idea I’m doing sports, so she won’t ask to come watch any games.
Perfect set-up.
I started jogging to school. Not Emma’s school- Memorial High School- but Jessica’s school- Allen D. Holmes High.
The story goes that Jessica is home-schooled. If you are home-schooled, you are allowed to participate in activities. She goes to Allen D. Holmes for sports.
“Hello, Jess,” exclaimed Coach Hendley. Ever since I’d beaten the school record for the mile, she’s been treating me with such a happier attitude.
I’d just jogged onto the field. All the girls were stretching out. They’d probably just taken a run around the field as a warm-up. My trip here was my warm-up. I joined their stretching circle.
“Hey, Jess, how was your run here?” said Mina sarcastically.
“It was great, Mina, thanks for asking,” I said sarcastically. A lot of the girls on the track team were rather sour to me. They thought that it wasn’t fair that I was better than them and I didn’t even go to their school… technically.
Whatever.
“Okay, ladies! Finish up! Finish up!” called Coach Hendley. “Come closer!” All of us moved towards her. “We have about twenty minutes until people start getting here. And you all know who these people are, correct?”
“The team from Overlook High!” we all exclaimed in unison. Overlook High was one of out biggest rivals. Well, it was second againstWilliamsAcademy. Their last meet of the year was againstWilliamsAcademy.
“So I want you all to stretch out really good, warm-up whatever needs to be warmed up and mentally prep your minds. Okay, break!” We all sighed at Coach Hendley’s fail of a football reference.
Twenty minutes later, the track field was poppin’ busy. Parents from Overlook were rushing around trying to make sure their children had everything- water bottles, ankle braces, etc. Coach Hendley was making sure everything was running smoothly. The Overlook team looked a bit confused as to where they were supposed to be at the moment, but they still looked intimidating despite that.
The meet began flawlessly. I did well in shot put. The Overlook girls glared at me after noticing I’d done far better than all of them, but I’d also exceeded all my teammates, earning stares from them, too.
Hurdles came next. They were a nightmare for us. Mina injured her ankle. I stumbled a bit, which really hurt my time. Another girl knocked one over and the rest of us just did terrible. You couldn’t even wipe the evil smirks off the Overlook team with a sponge laden with soap.
We beat the Overlook team’s asses in the rest of the events. We all did exceptionally well, being top-ranked in every event… except hurdles. Mina had to scratch the rest of the meet because of her ankle injury and we found out later that she would be out for the next week, but would be fine after that.
She deserved it for how she sassed me.
The opposing team left with sour faces. I admit that I was kind of scared they were going to bomb us with how they were looking at us.
I ran home and slipped into my room, unnoticed. I changed back to how I’d dressed this morning as Alexandra when I told my mom I was leaving for school. (I leave and then sneak back in to change into Emma.)
I entered the house from the front and greeted my parents happily. I picked up my bag and said something about homework. I didn’t have any homework this weekend actually. I just needed to get a nap in. I wouldn’t be getting much sleep tonight.
Because tonight… I would be sneaking out as Karter Johansen.

Author’s Note: I don’t really know anything about track… which I’d thought that through before I said she was a track star in the prologue. Oh well.
And sorry about the chapter lengths. They'll be longer once I originally introduce all the identities.
