"Gising na oyy." His sister knocked on his door, pounded on it even.

"Wait lang."

"Sige ka, si Nanay na aakyat dito. Late na tayo sa misa."

With a grunt, he sat half-awake. His clock read, 4:47am Dec 16.

Oh shit. Simbang gabi.

Another set of knock were heard by his door, this time light and caring. He knows it's Ate Niki.

"Bilisan mo daw dyan. Nakakahiyang malate."

"Opo."

He got up and washed his face. 4:50am. Taking his 'woke-up like this' image, he sighed. Nothing has changed.

Di ka parin masaya Nicom. Hindi ka na ata talaga sasaya.

Nicom tried to smile. After all, he shouldn't be sad and depressed. He's a Mendoza after all, one of the most prominent families in Sta. Maria, known for their annual Christmas events.

They're a fun and lovely family. He knows that; he is known for that. Nicom is fun and handsome, ask his friends. Ask the whole five of them.

"COM! COLENG! DEANNE! BABA NA!" Fuck. Si Nanay.

Nicom immediately threw a hoodie over his head and pulled a bonnet from his drawer. He pocketed his camera too, for documentation purposes, then ran down their stairs.

The Mendoza family home is just a few blocks away from La Purisima Concepcion Parish Church, the church they practically grew up with. Of course, being a rich family and all that, their donations have been a great help to the parish.

Kaya ayokong nagsisimbang gabi.

The usher, kumare ni Nanay, guided them to the front seat. They have reserved this for Mendozas every sunday and every holy day of obligation.

Indeed, they were one of those whom you can say as 'the family that prays together, stays together' role models. Except this season. His older brother, Nicolas, is still in the US for a race and wouldn't come home til before Noche Buena.

Pikit muna di pa sta -

"~BAYAN! Magsiawit ka Bayan!~" The overly enthusiastic choir sang. Nicom blamed his parents for donating a good sound system to this church, because now these old people's voices are breaking his eardrums.
