A few hours later, you climb back into Trent's car and he hands you all of the shopping bags y'all have acquired and then shuts the door. When he opens his door you have already put all of the bags in the back seat and are putting on your seat belt. Once he gets in and closes his door, he leans his head back on the head rest and looks at you.
"I am so sorry."
"Trent." You laugh and roll your eyes "I told you it's completely fine. I don't mind at all."
"I just wanted us to have a normal shopping day, but I.."
"You're a celebrity now. We shoulda known you would be noticed."
He reaches over and puts his hand on your leg "I really am sorry baby."
"Hey, I've always said I wanted to be a photographer." You wink at him "I just didn't know I'd be taking pictures of my boy friend and girls who are in love with him."
He laughs and squeezes your leg "they think they love me. If they ever knew the real me, they wouldn't be able to stand me."
"Nope." You say and glance at him, trying to hold the serious look on your face.. "I don't most of the time"
He cranks the car and looks at you with a forced hurt expression "that's not very nice.."
The hurt on his face takes you by surprise and as you open your mouth to apologize, a smile breaks across Trent's face.
You playfully push his hand off your leg and stare out the window as he pulls back onto the road.
He reaches back over and turns on the radio and then slides his fingers between yours. You look over at him and smile as the song on the radio ends.
"Speaking of your photography..." Trent says, nonchalantly over the music "I have a surprise for you at my house."
"Hmmm I wonder what it could be.." you laugh. "Trent.. you have me enough stuff. I don't need any thing else.. you bought me all that stuff for our 5 months today.." you say as you motion to the back seat full of shopping bags.
"This isn't for our 5 months.." he says and glances over at you, trying to fight a smile.. "it's a very early 6 month present.."
"Trent.." you say quietly. "I don't want you spending your money on me.."
"Be quiet." He says back quickly. "It's my money. Also, I got it on sale. Now stop it."
You sigh and he rubs his thumb over your knuckles.
"I can't believe it's been 5 months..." he says quietly after a few minutes.
"I know.. it feels like so much longer than that, but also I feel like we haven't been together that long.."
"Exactly." He says. "But you know how they say 'when you know, you know?'"
Your breath catches in your throat and you shift in your seat and stare at him. You nod and he says "I know. You're who I'm gonna spend my life with. I've known since that day on the porch."
"That narrows it down." You laugh.
"Babe, you know what day I'm talking about. The day I asked you to be my girl friend.. before I even asked you. I knew it then."
Your heart speeds up and you turn down the radio.. "really??"
"Yes. I'm going to marry you one day. Just like I told you at the beach.."
"Can it be sooner, rather than later?" You ask and he takes a deep breath..
"I'd like for it to be.. but that's up to you."
"What do you mean??"
"Well.. I want you to be ready. I don't wanna rush you into anything." He says and then adds "we've only known each other a little over 5 months. And I don't want you to think that if we don't get engaged soon, that we never will."
You look back at him questioningly.
"Trent.."
"No, (y/n) I want you to understand that I'm willing to wait as long as you want. Because I know that I'm going to marry you one day. I will promise you that again.
God has showed me in multiple ways that you're the one... and I am almost sure that you aren't ready to move to Nashville and tour and be married. And that's okay with me." He says and takes a breath.
You don't realize there are tears rolling down your cheeks until he glances over at you and wipes them away.
"Oh baby. I didn't want you to cry. I just wanted you to know that I'm not going to rush you into anything. And I know you want to marry me, but that doesn't mean we have to right now. Do I like the long distance thing? No." He continues. "But I'm more than happy with you and I'm more than happy to keep this going until you're really ready to get married.. I like surprising you and getting to look forward to some day with you... Theres still so much for us to learn... so until you're ready I'm happy. More than happy... as long as you know that I love you."
You sniffle and smile "so... no ring today?"
You laugh.
His breath catches and he looks over at you.
"You thought I was going to propose today?"
"I thought you might.." you say and wipe the remainder of the tears from your face.
He sighs and runs his thumb over your knuckles again... "no ring for you today.."
You ride in silence for a few minutes. After a while, you say "thank you."
"For what honey?"
"For being so real with me. And for not rushing me.."
You say and lean over and kiss his cheek. "I love you Trenton."
You see him loosen up and take a deep breath.. "I love you more."
You turn the radio up and turn back toward the front.
"So.. can I know about the song?" You ask quietly.
"What song?" Trent asks.
"What song?" You say and laugh "you know what song, doofus."
"Oh?"
"TRENT."
His laugh fills the car and he glances over at you and then back at the road and changes lanes.
He takes a breath and says "it's called there's a girl."
"There's a girl?"
"Yeah" he says and looks over at you. "Do you wanna hear the first cut track?"
You take an excited breath and suddenly a sharp pain shoots down your throats and causes you to have a coughing spell. After a few minutes of coughing, you get it under control and say "um yeah"
He pulls his phone out of his pocket and pushes a few buttons. A few seconds later, a few guitar chords come through the car speakers and then Trent starts singing.
"There's a girl somewhere in tupelo, with a guy she barely knows who'd prolly sale his soul for a kiss.."
You feel a smile reach across your face from ear to ear, and you look over at Trent who looks nervous.
"Ain't it crazy how they make us all go crazy? Why would we drive 600 miles one way? Blow through cash that we ain't made? Get tattoos and wash our trucks? Push and press or luck? Why would we ask when we know we cant dance? Show our hands and change our plans? Lose our minds? Break our hearts? Learn to play guitar? Why does any man do anything in the whole damn world? Cuz there's a girl.."
He turns down the radio and looks over at you.
"You wrote this?"
He nods quickly, and then swallows.
"Trent. That's amazing.."
He releases the breath he's been holding "do you really think so??"
"Yes!!! I think it's going to be a hit. Seriously. I love it. A lot."
A smile works it way across his face as the redness grows.
"Thank you." He says as he grips your hand tighter. "I can't believe Scott wants this over falling."
Thank you." He says as he grips your hand tighter. "I can't believe Scott wants this over falling."
"Because this is you Trent... this song is so you."
"It's me, because it's you. You're the girl."
"I hoped I was.." you giggle.
He smiles and opens his mouth but is interrupted by his phone ringing.
"Hey!" He says holding the phone up to his ear. "Yeah man... we are on our way back now.."
"Fair park at 6:15?"
"See you there"
He hangs up and looks over at you..
"Still feel like helping me tonight?"
"Duh!" You say "who was that?"
"clay." He says quickly, as he takes the exit that says Amory, MS. "We need to hurry. We have a few things we need to do."
