Part 41: The Night Before a Wedding

You hug Clay and then Ashley and promise to be early in the morning. You look around the room for Trent and and when you see him, your eyes lock and you smile. "Later." You say to Ashley and walk over to Trent.
"You ready?" He asks as he stands up and pulls you into a hug.
"Mhm." You say quietly and wrap your arms around his waist and lay your head on his chest.
You follow him out of the room and out the door. Ms. Cindy comes over and hugs Trent and then you. "Y'all leaving?"
"Yeah.." trent says and then smiles at you.
"I've gotta be at the church really early tomorrow for Ashley so I've gotta get home."
Cindy laughs and says "that's understandable"
You walk over and tell Randi Kathryn that you're leaving and then follow trent out of the door.
Before you can speak, Trent's phone rings and he looks to see who it is.
"It's Scott. I've gotta answer. I'm sorry."
"It's okay." You say and smile at him softly.  You want to take his hand but decide against it to keep from distracting him.
"Hello?" You hear trent say and then you hear Scott talking on the other line. You listen carefully but can't tell exactly what he's saying.
Halfway to the car, Trent breathes a sigh and looks at you as he slides his fingers between yours.
"Yessir. I'm sorry. It has just been a hard week for me to be away from home."
"No sir."
"No sir. I'll be more focused next week."
"Yes sir I understand." Trent says as he opens your car door and you climb inside.
He stands outside his door for a second as Scott continues talking in his ear.
"Alright." Trent says as he climbs in and shuts his car door.
"Yeah she's with me." He says and smiles as he cranks his car. "Well okay. I will."
"Yeah she's planning on coming back with me."
"She can just stay at the apartment during the day. Or she has some friends up there."
"Mr. Scott."
"Okay. Yes sir. Talk to you later."
Trent slides his fingers back between yours as he leaves the Longhorn parking lot.
"What's going on" you ask, nervously
"Scott said you don't need to come up until Friday this week so I'm not distracted."
"I'm not gonna distract you."
"I know. But he said it's gonna be a lot of late nights. It's up to you, honey." He says and smiles at you.
"I really don't like Scott as much any more..." You say quietly and turn up the music on the radio.
"I wanna make you feel wanted..." plays through the speakers as trent turns his car into your driveway.
When he parks, he looks over at you and smiles.
"I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault Trent.."
"I should have been more focused this week.."
"But you have a lot on your mind.."
"Yeah.." he says and you lean over and touch your lips to his.
"I love you." You whisper close to his lips and then touch yours to his again.
"I love you too." He smiles and touches your face.
You open the door and smile back at him "I'll see you in the morning.."
"I can't wait." He says and you shut the door.

10 minutes later, your phone buzzes and you smile as you read the message from Trent.
"Hey sweetie. I'm home and about to shower. I'll send you a message when I get out."
"Okay." You send back and go back to your Netflix.
A few seconds later, your ringtone starts blaring and you pick it up without checking the caller ID.
"Hello?"
"Y/n?"
"Yes?" You say and sit up on the bed.
"This is Lauren. Lauren Akins."
You aren't sure if this is a joke and don't know how to respond and before you can come up with something she says
"Thomas Rhett's wife. We met at the.."
"Lauren. I know who you are" You laugh "I just wasn't sure if it was really you."
"Yes it's really me. Trent gave TR your number to give to me. I hope that's okay."
"That's absolutely fine." You laugh and say "how are y'all doing?"
"We are good!! How are you?"
"I'm making it!" You laugh "two of mine and Trent's great friends are getting married tomorrow so I'm exhausted."
"Oh that's always fun." She says and you can hear her smile. "So how's everything going with Trent?"
"Eh" You say and try to decide how much to say.
"Thomas Rhett had a dinner meeting with Scott tonight and Scott mentioned that he had a rough week."
"Oh.." You say, shaking your head "Yeah he did. He's been wishing he was home to help clay get ready for the wedding."
"Clay? His new band mate?" Lauren asks.
"Yeah!"
"That's so fun. But yeah I understand why he's distracted. I wasn't calling to be nosey. I just wanted to make sure y'all are okay. I know Scott can be a little not understanding and hard headed."
"Yeah he chewed trent out two or three times. And Trent's about fed up. But I think he's really exhausted. Scott cut his trip home short so he's gotta go back on Sunday night now."
"That's Scott for ya." She says "once his opry debut is over, Scott will lay off of him for a little while. He just wants him to be perfect."
"Yeah trent understands. It's just been hard for him to balance everything this week." You say as your phone beeps. You look at it and see Ashley calling you. You ignore the call and listen to Lauren.
"Yeah it'll get easier.." she says and then "I called to see if you and Trent want to come over for a late dinner on Thursday night after Trent's practice run on the Opry stage."
"Lauren that'd be awesome! But it might be super late."
"TR has to be there too, part of a label mate, mentor thing. So it'll be late anyway. "
"That'd be awesome!! That sounds awesome!!"
"GREAT! I'll text you the details." She says and then "oh by the way. I think that the caller ID probably says blocked caller but that's because we have to do that, and you probably will have to very soon if Scott has any idea. I'll send you a message from my number and you can save it. You can call me or text me anytime you need me. Just be sure that no one goes through your phone, because it could cause a lot of problems."
"Yeah I've already had to change my password a few times" You laugh.
"Yeah you find out who your friends are sometimes." She says and you hear someone in the background.
"Girl TR just walked in with ice cream so let me let you go. I'll send you a text in a few so you'll have my number. Never be afraid to reach out if you need me."
"For sure. Thank you so much Lauren."
"Anytime. Bye girl!"
"Bye!" You say and then hear the click as she hangs up. You look at your phone as the call disappears and shake your head.
"How is this my life?" You think and see a missed call from Ashley and three messages.
You slide the call over and return her call.
"Hey why are you ignoring my calls the night before my wedding?"
"I was on the phone." You laugh.
"Who is more important than me right now?"
"No one Ash." You laugh and hear her giggle.
"Anyway. Can you come over? RK is coming over and we are gonna have a sleep over."
"Ashley you need to get rest. You're not gonna get much tomorrow night.." You laugh and she does too.
"But I wanna spend my last night with my girls."
You look at your watch and smile.
"Okay. I'll be there in fifteen minutes."
"You're the best. Bring ice cream." She says and hangs up the phone.
"I'm staying with Ashley tonight.. I'll talk to you tomorrow. Good night. I love you." You send to Trent as you climb in your car.
"I love you more. Don't get into trouble 😉" Trent sends back instantly. And you smile and think about how different your life already is and how much it is going to change.
