Part 25: Another Sick Day

You lock your phone and smile as you hear Katie rambling.
"And then I told them that my trent Harmon loves my sissy and they didn't believe me.."
She says and you look up "Katie. I thought we talked about not telling everybody that."
"Yeah well" she says as a sheepish smile creeps onto her face "they didn't believe that I know him. And I do sissy. I do know him."
You laugh and say "yeah. I know you do. Why didn't you just show them your picture with him?"
"I did! And they all said that was from the thing last time he was home when all those people got to meet him. And I told them nu-uh but they didn't believe me. Not even my teacher, sissy."
You try to hide a smile and you say "well, sometimes people won't believe you no matter what..."
"Maybe he will come home before I get out of school and he can go with me.. and I can show them that.."
"Katie" your mom says as she walks into the living room "you know he's not getting to come home until June for Elvisfest.."
"I know but I thought he might get to come home before that..."
"Maybe he will..." she says and smiles. "Now go change clothes so we can go eat when your dad gets home..."
Katie jumps out of your lap and runs up stairs and your mom walks over to you.
"How you feelin?"
"I'm feeling a little better, but I still feel like my throat is on fire.."
"I'll bring your medicine.." she says as she walks into the kitchen.
As she walks back into the room she says "have you heard from him today?"
"Uh, he just sent me a text about an hour ago and told me he was getting on a flight."
"Where's he going now?"
"I have no idea. Probably back to Nashville to write.. he said something about that when I talked to him Monday.."
She nods and hands you your medicine and then says "you feel like going with us tonight? We are gonna go eat at the Longhorn for Kyle's birthday.."
"Yeah, I want to.."
"I dont know (y/n).... you look like your fever might be coming back up.."
You take your fever and it reads 100.3.
"Guess I'm not going" you sigh and lay back on the couch.
"Kyle will understand, honey.." your mom says and kisses your forehead.
"I know.."
she walks into the hallway and your phone buzzes.
You smile as Trent's name appears on your phone and you slide it open to read his message.
"Hey sweet girl. We literally just landed. Thought about you the whole flight. Miss you so much. Can't believe it will be a month next week since we have seen each other. Just a few more weeks until I get to see you!! Wish you could come on radio tour with me this summer. Anyway, I have a little while I can text cuz we will be in the car for a while.. so talk to me, be my friend.. how are you feeling? Strep going away?"
You feel a smile cross your face and you start typing back.
"Hey! I miss you so much. I wish I could see you NOW! I wish I could, but you already know how my parents would take that.. someday soon though...😊 where are you headed now? I was feeling a lot better but my temperature is going back up, so I can't go eat with my family for Kyle's birthday.. so I'm gonna be here by myself. So I'm glad you can talk for a while."
He immediately reads your message and then a few seconds later, his reply comes through.
"UGH I wish I was there to take care of you until you felt better. I hate that you're sick and I'm not there. Take a bubble bath and then a nap. I'm not going anywhere- seriously.. no big plans for today, so I will be able to talk a lot.. tomorrow I have a busy day though..."
You laugh to your self and easily fall into conversation with him. You tell him about Katie's day and he says he wishes he could prove it to her class.
A few minutes into your conversation, your mom walks in and says "okay, honey. We are leaving.. I'll have my phone on me, call if you need anything."
"Okay I will." You smile at her and settle back into the couch.
"Oh, aunt sherry said she may come by and bring you some stuff... like she always does when you're sick.."
"Okay.." you laugh.
After they leave, you continue your conversation with Trent.
"Guess who I had supper with last night in LA?" He sends with a winky face.
"Uhhh president Obama?"
"Ha. Ha. You're so funny. No. Carrie. And Scotty. And jordin."
"Just rub it in why don't ya?"
"That's what I enjoy doing, ya know?"
You laugh and type back "yeah. I'm aware."
"They all agreed that you should traveling be with me."
"I agree that I should be, too."
"I know.. I wish you could."
"You know there's only one way that could ever happen with my parents permission... 💍💍💍💍😉"
He responds quickly with "soon. Maybe sooner than you think 😜"
Your heart flutters a few times and you feel your self blush, and are suddenly aware of how tired your eyes are.
"I can't wait.." you type back. Then you add, "I hope my mom brings home a pack of cough drops home. My throat is throbbing.."
"I'm sorry sweetie.. I'd bring you some if I could..."
"I know.. thank you t.... i'm so tired I can't hold my eyes open. I'll text you as soon as I wake up. Nap time. I love you."
"Sleep good!" He responds and your heart drops, just for a second. But before the sadness can sink in, another message comes through. "I love you. Even if I don't always say it. I love you so much. Sleep good honey."
You feel the butterflies dance around your stomach and you smile to yourself as you fall asleep.
When you wake up, you glance over at the clock and see that an hour has passed. You sit up and look st your phone. You answer a few messages from clay and Ashley, and then you text Trent.
"Hey sweets. I just woke up. Feeling a little better!! Hope you're having fun. You don't have to text me back if your busy! I know you have stuff to do. Just wanted to tell you that I'm awake."
He responds with "finally!!"
After y'all talk for a few minutes, you hear a knock at your door. You climb off the couch to go let your aunt sherry in. As you walk over, you see your reflection in the mirror over the fire place, and think to yourself "oh I'm so glad aunt sherry has seen me like this before." You run your fingers through your hair as you get to the door.
You turn the door knob and pull the door open and your jaw drops.
"Did someone call for cough drops, and a hug?" Trent says and holds his arms out.
"TRENT!!" You say in a raspy voice. "What're you doing here??"
"My girl is sick, and I have a few days off, so here I am.. to make you feel better.." he says quietly as he pulls you into a hug.
He kisses your forehead and you look up at him with tears in your eyes. "Are you really here?? Or is it the fever??"
"Haha I'm really here. If I wasn't, could I do this?" He asks and kisses you gently on the lips.
You smile up at him and say "Trent you're gonna get sick.."
He winks at you and shrugs his shoulders.. "I don't mind.." he touches his lips to yours again quickly. He pulls you back into a hug and you stand wrapped in his arms for a minute or two. You try to move inside with him but he pulls away and walks ahead of you and grabs a blanket. He walks back toward you and takes your hand as he leads you outside.
"I don't think your parents would be too happy to see me if they came home and we were in there alone.." he says with a smirk on his face as you sit next to him on the swing.
"Probably not." You laugh as he puts the blanket over both of you. You barely notice the cool May breeze as you slide your arm under Trent's and he slides his fingers between yours. You look up at him and smile when he looks back down at you. "You're getting pretty good at the surprises.."
"Yeah I think I am too.."
"Who knows your home?"
"My parents. Clay. RK."
"Ashley?"
"No ashley doesn't know yet."
Before you can ask why, a car pulls into your driveway and you look it's direction. You quickly notice that it is your aunts vehicle.
"Who's that?" Trent asks, looking at you.
"Aunt sherry." You laugh "she's gonna be so excited to see you here."
She gets out of her car and comes walking over. She comes up on the porch and for the first time, notices you on the porch. She stares at Trent for a second and then realizes who it is.
"(Y/n)! Trent!! What're you doing here?"
"I had to come home and take care of her." He says and nods to you as he stands up and hugs her.
You all talk for a little while and she gives you a "sicky bag"- a bag full of goodies to make you feel better- before she leaves.
After she pulls out of the drive way, Trent sits down next to you and pulls the blanket up to your shoulders and you lay your head on his shoulder as his fingers lace with yours again.
"I love you." He whispers and kisses your cheek and lays his head on yours.
"I love you more, Trenton William." You reply as a warm feeling spreads through you and the butterflies start dancing again.
You talk and laugh for a little while, until your family pulls into the drive way. You raise your head up from Trent's shoulder and look to the car to see your parents staring at the figure next to you. Suddenly, you hear the back door sling open and Katie yells "TRENT!!!!"
You hear Trent chuckle and then he gets up, nearly knocking you over and meets Katie at the steps. "Katie bug!!!"
"You're home!!!!!! I need you to come talk to my class and show them that you know me." She says all in one breath and everyone laughs.
"Well, what a surprise," you mom says eyeing you and Trent, with a forced smile on her face.
"I didn't know he was coming home. He knocked on the door and we came out here. And that's where we've been, since.." you say quickly to your parents before they try to accuse you of anything.
Your dad doesn't look convinced, but finally a smile cracks over his face.
"Well... welcome home Trent. How long are you here for?" He says.
"Uh.. I have meetings early Wednesday morning. So I have to go back Tuesday." He says. And then adds with a laugh "I have some business to take care of here."
"Cool deal. Guess we won't be seeing (y/n) much until then" Your dad says, jokingly. Trent laughs "I won't keep her from you too much, I promise" your dad laughs and then walks inside followed by your mom and Kyle. Then he glances down at his watch. "I need to get home before my parents do.. "
"It's only 10..." you whine. "Can I go with you??"
Katie looks up at him and says "me too. I wanna go!!"
"Not tonight, my sweet girls."
A sad feeling rushes through you and Trent bends down to Katie's level.
"I'll see you tomorrow okay? I promise."
"Okay.." she sighs and hugs him.
"I love you, Trent." She says quietly.
"Love you too, Katie bug"
As she walks in, he stands back up to your level, but you keep your eyes down.
"Hey..." he says putting his hand under your chin and lifting it until your eyes meet. "I'm sorry I can't stay here longer tonight. You need your rest and I promised my parents I'd be home before they are.."
"Okay.." you sniff and he wraps his arms around you. He whispers in your ear "tomorrow, it's just you and me. All day. And it's gonna be perfect and special."
You smile and lean back and look him as heat rushes through your body.
"I can't wait." You whisper quietly.
"Me either.." he whispers back and kisses your cheek.
He steps back and says "I love you. I'll see you in the morning."
"I love you." You say quickly and he walks slowly back to his car. Before he climbs in, he winks at you and smiles.
As he pulls away, you walk into your house. You make your way to your bed room and fall into your bed.
And for the first time in a month, you fall asleep dreaming of tomorrow.
