You lock your phone and sigh as you look up at Ashley who is looking at you.
"Anything?" She asks as she walks up.
"Not yet." You say and stand up. "He will be here soon, I'm sure!"
"I hope so."
"When I talked to him earlier, he was pissed that Scott made him come up there today. But he said he should be here in time for the rehearsal." Ashley looks at her watch and sighs.
"We will give him 10 or 15 more minutes then we will start... I promised Cindy we would be at the Longhorn by 8:15."
"That's fine. I'm sure he can figure out him job.. if not, I'll help him." You laugh and wrap her in a hug. "Can't believe you're getting married tomorrow.."
"Me either" she says as she hugs you back. Then she walks over to the wedding planner as you unlock your phone and open your messages to Trent and read the last one you sent him.
"We will talk about it tonight. Please be here on time, Ashley has enough on her plate - she doesn't need to be worried about you not knowing what to do." It had been read two hours before but he didn't respond. You read back over the conversation that yall had before that message and shake your head at the thought of the attitude Trent has had all day. You click the "message" section and start typing.
"If you aren't here in 15 minutes we are starting. A message back would be nice to know if you're close. Please be careful it's supposed to start raining any minute."
You hit send and lock your phone.
20 minutes later you hear ashley say "let's just get started. We can catch Trent up when he gets here." You smile at her and stick your phone in the pocket on your dress. You walk to the back and start talking to the bridesmaids.
"Where's the Best man?" One of the girls asks you, looking around.
"Uh.. he had a meeting in Nashville at 1 this afternoon but he should be back any second.." you smile at her and the music starts. You all get into line. You look at the bridesmaids and groomsmen standing side by side and  sigh to yourself and move up as the first two walk down the aisle. You hear katie giggle behind you and you smile to yourself. Before you can turn around to tell her to act right, someone come up and slips their arm through yours.
"Told you i'd be here." A voice whispers into your ear and chills shoot up your spine as he kisses your cheek.
"Trent.." you smile up at him and see his gorgeous smile grow on his face, as you each take a step forward. "Ashley was so pissed." You whisper and look into his eyes. For the first time, you notice a wall up between yall in his eyes, and your smile falls.. "you okay?" You turn toward him and  he smiles a fake smile and says "yeah I'm fine."
"Trent?"you whisper and touch his cheek
"I'm okay." He says with an irritated tone and pulls away. "We can talk about it later. Just focus on the rehearsal, okay? Can you please just do that?"
You inhale quietly and turn back to the front and Trent puts his arm back through yours and you head down the aisle and the split when you get to the front. When you stand next to where Ashley will stand tomorrow, you look over at Trent who finishes talking to clay. When he thinks no one is looking, you see him smile fall as he looks down at his hands that are folded in front of him. You sigh and listen as ashley gives instructions for everyone, all while keeping an eye on Trent's expression.
After Everyone is done, you watch as Trent walks over and hugs Ashley and she looks at him, worriedly. You walk up as she says "you sure you're good?"
"Yeah.. just a rough day with Scott." When he sees you walk up, he smiles at you, and then walks away.
"Y'all alright?" She asks, worrying. "Yeah! I think so ash! Don't worry about us! This is your weekend. we will probably ride to the Longhorn together, so we will talk then." You smile at her, trying to make her not worry.
She smiles back but before she can answer, someone calls for her and she runs off and stands next to clay, who is talking to someone. You watch as he wraps his arm around her waist and pulls her closer as they talk. a smile crosses your face as Katie runs up to you and you bend down to her level. You look around and see Trent shaking someone's hand and then focus back on katie.
"Was I a good flower girl sissy?" She asks as she throws her arms around your neck.
"Yes!  You did so good!!" You laugh and kiss her cheek. After you talk to her for a little while, you stand up and look around for Trent. You see him walking out of the back door and you start walking fast and catch up with him halfway to his vehicle.
"Hey um were you not gonna tell me you were leaving?" You ask, grabbing his arm and pulling on it so he turns around. When he turns to face you, you see a weird look on his face and he takes a small step back, but you keep a grip on his fingers.
"Well. I knew I'd see you at the Longhorn..  I was just gonna go see if mama needed any help."
"Well okay. Be careful."
"I will." He says and lets go of your hand. "See you there." He says as he smiles a weak smile and then turns to walk away. You watch him climb in his car and drive away and fight the tears that are coming into your eyes.
30 minutes later, you walk into the Longhorn and look around and see Trent sitting at a table, looking at his phone. You head over to talk to him, but Ashley calls your name and is ready to take pictures before you eat. You smile for a few pictures with Ashley and the bridesmaids and then watch as she takes pictures with everyone else and then they call Trent over and take groomsmen pictures. Then, ashley says "hey (y/n) you and Trent stand there so we can take yalls pic." You walk up and Trent puts his arm around your waist and you look up at him as he plasters a fake smile on his face, then you smile at the camera for a second. After the picture is taken, Trent walks out of the room and you follow after him.
"Trent." You say, trying to keep your voice down.
"What?" He snaps back as he keeps walking.
"What is going on?"
"I've just had a really rough day and I don't feel like talking."
"Okay..." you say quietly "I'm just worried about you."
"You don't have to be. I'm fine." Trent says as he turns and looks at you for a second. The wall in his eyes has broken a little and has been replaced with irritation.
"I don't believe you." You say as you take a step toward him. Trent looks around the room and notices people starting to look at you. You look and see Cindy standing near the kitchen watching y'all.
"I'm not gonna do this here." He says quietly and then turns and walks out the door to the back porch of the Longhorn. You look around the room as Trent slams the door and Ms. Cindy comes toward you. "What's going on? It's not like Trent to make a scene like that..." she asks.
"I have no idea." You smile softly at her. "I dont know whether to follow him or not. I've been talking to him all night and he's been pulling further away."
"I know that whenever he's feeling down, you're always the one he want beside him. Even if he doesn't talk. .." she says and then puts her hand on your arm "be patient with him. I think Scott's putting a lot on him with the Opry coming up next week." And then walks away.
"The Opry." You think to yourself "I wonder if Scott pulled it..." and head toward the back door.
When you walk onto the porch, Trent is sitting on the stairs staring out at the dark pasture. You close the door quietly and then stand there and watch him. He sits completely still with his eyes fixed straight ahead. After a few minutes, you walk over and sit next to him on the stairs. After a few seconds, he scoots closer to you where your legs are touching and you lay your head on his shoulder. Then he leans his head on top of yours. After a minute or two, he lifts his head and says "what do you wanna say?"
You lift your head and look up at him "huh?"
"I know you have things to say. So here's your time."
"I don't have anything to say." You say and look at the field and then back at him. "I'm just here to listen or just sit with you."
He takes a deep breath and then looks up at the sky. You lay your head back on his shoulder and thunder rumbles the sky.
"I think the rain is here..." Trent says and you smile. After a few seconds, Trent slides his arm under yours and rests his hand on your leg. You put your hand on top of his and he kisses the top of your head.
After a minute or two, rain starts falling and you can feel the wall between you and Trent start to break. Trent sniffles and then says "he made me feel like straight shit today."
"Who?" You ask, careful to not push too hard.
"Scott." He says and lifts his head off of yours again as the rain comes down harder. "We had rehearsal for the Opry today. And of course we were down a guitarist because Clay was here. And it was just a rough rehearsal. And we went on break and Scott came in and was mad because we took the break. And so we jumped up and started rehearsal again and it all fell apart. Even There's a Girl was awful. And he was yelling. Like legitimately yelling. And told me if we couldn't get our shit together he would cancel the Opry performance." Trent says quietly and the continues "and the pulled me into the hallway and told me that I was too distracted and that he needed me back Sunday night and ready to practice Monday morning."
"But we.."
"I know..." he says "I tried to tell him and he said I'd been with you for a week and it would be fine."  You sit quietly and he says "then he said we had to push back the engagement announcement until after the Opry. Too many things at once. And then he said we may have to push back the wedding."
"What??" You lift your head and look at Trent.
"I'm doing what I can. But..."
"Why can he push back our wedding? It's our day??"
"I signed a contract."
"But.."
"I know..." he says as he tightens his grip on your leg.
"How long are we talkin?"
"From June to October..."
"Trent..."
"I'm sorry. I'm trying."
"I'm not mad at you. I just want to be with you. October is over a year away."
"I know.."
"What happens if we just elope?"
"Are you being serious?" Trent asks, leaning back so you look up at him.
"Well.." you say and search his eyes. "I just wanna be with you. In all ways. And this changing everything sucks. We could just load up our families, go to the mountain and get married. It would save time and money and I'm not sure how we are going to pay for a wedding anyway."
"The money isn't a worry.."
"Trent that's not the point. What's the worst case scenario if we did that? What could Scott do?"
"Worst case scenario?" Trent says "he drops me from the label."
"Oh." You say and lay your head on his shoulder as he wraps his arm around your waist and scoots closer.
"I just want you Trent." You whisper.
"I want you too baby." He says back and you feel tears in your eyes.
"What if I move to Nashville? Get my own apartment."
"Do you really want to do that? Live by yourself in a big city?"
"I wouldn't be by myself. I'd be with you."
"You know i would be so happy if you moved to Nashville. But you know that I'm not always in Nashville. I'm still on radio tour.."
"But you're there more than you are here."
"I know.." he says and lays his head on yours again.
"Why were y'all struggling at practice?" You ask as the rain starts pouring harder.
"My brain was here. With you. With my friends. With my family."
Before you can respond, Clay comes to the door. "Can y'all come in? We are about to eat."
