It didn't take long, but we all got settled in. Everyone was loving the new place, no one seemed to have any problems with the people they were rooming with. Most of us were hanging out on the furniture in The front room, but I had tucked away into the front office.
I was working to get the word out about the center. I decided to make some posters to hang up, but I knew it would take more. I was shuffling through some papers, when Jace walked in.
"What are you doing?" He asked, as he walked up to my desk.
"Just going through some papers."
"Don't you want to have some fun? we just got here."
"I know, but this isn't going to start itself. We need to get the word out."
"Ok, I'll help you so it goes faster, and then you can have some fun."
"Great." I said, with a smile. "I was starting these posters to hang up." I showed him a poster.
"You can draw?" He asked, pointing to the picture on the poster of a locked closet door with rainbow paint oozing through the cracks.
"It's not very good, just a doodle." I replied.
"No, this is great."
"Thanks."
"Ok, so there's a closet on the poster."
"Yeah."
"If you are thinking of coming out, there's no need to be afraid anymore." Jace began to read the poster. "recently opened is a center for LGBT youth to go if they get kicked out for coming out." Jace finished, as he read the address.
"So, what do you think?"
"I think it's good."
"Should we make the outside look good? Like put a sign or something."
"Yeah, let's go out and see what the rest of us want."
"Ok." I agreed, and we walked to the front room.
"We need ideas for the front of the building." Jace announced to everyone sitting in the lobby area.
There was silence for a couples minutes while they were thinking. Jace and I sat down, and started thinking as well.
"We don't have to thin of something right now, we can-"
"I have an idea." Jupiter started.
"What is it?" I asked.
"What if we got gallons of paint, the colors of the rainbow flag, and went to the roof and dumped them down the front of the building. It would look cool, with the paint run down the side."
"I love that idea. We just have to get paint."
"Great."
"Do you guys want to help us put up these posters?" I asked, holding a stack of the posters.
"Sure." A couple agreed, and I handed out some posters.
"Ok, we can hand these out whenever you're out." I said, as I got up and went outside.
I started putting up the posters everywhere I could think of. I put them on information boards, and then I was putting them on some phone polls around town. I was excited, it was working out. For once something was working out like I wanted. I was taping a poster to a pole when someone came up to me.
"Are you the one with these posters?" The man asked.
"Yeah, trying to help." I said, excitedly
"Why are you trying to help them."
"Well, it's something that needs help, and I'd like to point out that I'm one of them."
"You shouldn't be supporting something that's wrong."
"It's not wrong. You want to know what's wrong? What's wrong is someone kicking their family out of their house for being who they were born to be."
"They should kick them out, it's wrong and unnatural."
"If it's wrong and unnatural, then why were we born this way? It's in our DNA."
"You are wrong. It's unnatural, and gross, and you shouldn't act like-"
"I'm not acting like anything. I used to be acting, acting like I was straight, but I'm not."
"Just stop, stop promoting being queer."
"I'm not, we're promoting people to be themselves."
"You're just a fag." He said, as he pushed me down.
"You know what? I don't care what you think of me." I paused. "I'm queer!" I yelled, from the ground.
"That's so gay." He said, as he kicked me.
"I am! I am so gay, and it's a good thing! Not a synonym for bad or lame!"
"You need to learn to watch your mouth." He said, as he punched my face.
"I could say the same for you." I pushed, but he punched me again, and kicked my side."
"Dirty gay." He said, as he stood up an walked away.
I struggled, but managed to sit up. My vision was a little blurry, but I stood up, and walked back home. I got there, and walked inside. Everyone was still sitting in the lobby.
"Ari?!" Jace asked, as I rushed by.
I went straight up to our room, and went into the bathroom. I sat on the floor because my head was spinning. I felt sick, and before I knew it I was coughing up blood into the bathroom floor.
"Ari!" Jace yelled, as he ran over to me. "What the hell happened?!" He asked, but I didn't answer, I just laid down on the floor. "Ari?!" He yelled, as he shook me. "shit... shit." He mumbled to himself. "Ok, I'm going to move you to the bed, and you'll be ok." Jace said, as he started picking me up, but everything went black before he got me off the floor.
