Plot: Kyon, your typical high school student, has long given up his belief in the supernatural. However, upon meeting Haruhi Suzumiya, he quickly finds out that it is the supernatural that she is interested in—aliens, time travelers, and espers among other things. When Haruhi laments about the lack of intriguing clubs around school, Kyon inspires Haruhi to form her own club. As a result, the SOS Brigade is formed, a club which specializes in all that is the supernatural.
Much to his chagrin, Kyon, along with the silent bookworm, Yuki Nagato, the shy and timid Mikuru Asahina, and the perpetually smiling Itsuki Koizumi, are recruited as members. The story follows the crazy adventures that these four endure under their whimsical leader, Haruhi. The story is based on the light novels by Nagaru Tanigawa.

Opinion: It took me forever to finish this series. It's the third of January, 2017. I'm pretty sure I started this show, watching the first episode, over a year ago. Man, time fly's, and this series has left some imprints within me. While this specific anime may not be the greatest, this series certainly has something amazing to offer. Ladies and gents, let's get right into my opinion of this anime!
Primarily, the story, the plot. Okay, I'll openly admit that this anime had an awesome story, or at least an awesome idea for one. The entirety sounds amazing, a thriller that could meet almost anyone's expectations and keep them hooked. But it wasn't much more than an idea. The way I see it, it was poorly executed, and because of such, I found the majority of this anime incredibly dull. The ideas and what they wanted to do with the supernatural concepts caught my attention immediately. However as the show continued they didn't use that potential for an incredible, over the top story to it's fullest.
As it stands, most of this anime was dull, bland and so boring I could have fallen asleep. In a nutshell it's one girl and a crazy club doing crazy things. When it's worded that way it seems way less special. But I can't deny that there was a handful of episodes that where interesting, well done, and received the highest of my praise for that.
Secondly is the art style and animation. It's an older-ish anime. I get that. And for the most part, it looked great! But, maybe it's just me, just the way Haruhi is drawn, it seems that her eyes are too far apart. Almost like she has some birth defect. I can't even explain how many times I made jokes about her face throughout the series. Generally, all the characters and scenery are done smoothly and with great effort.
Third is our soundtrack. What more can I say besides it was great? Not my favorite series of songs, but certainly a series of good ones. Both openings and both endings were very good and sounded great. The anime certainly did well in this category.
Finally, our characters. Outside of the main five or so characters, I could really tell how shallow the rest of the supporting roles where. Little sister is only there to be cute, generic best friends of the protagonist, etc. When not looking at the main people, the anime really let show how bad the rest of it's characters were. However! The main characters are all that really matter, and my god where they great!
Kyon was a likable protagonist, that I wouldn't mind having a cup of tea with. Our alien was defiantly a great character despite her lack of emotion or personality for a large portion of the series. Our time traveler was cute, a likable individual that most where sure to attach themselves to. The esper was a mellow, relaxed guy that also had a serious and powerful side.
But Haruhi? Major bitch alter! For the most part, I hated her! She was a total ass almost all the time for no real reason. She was without a doubt, one of the worst heroine I've ever seen. She was just a brat that I could hardly ever support. And when she was filming her movie? I've almost never wanted a character to get punched as much as I wanted her to. She was the only serious issue I had with the characters. I hated her.
This anime wasn't that great. But there's always a bright side. It wasn't trash, and watching is worth it when you understand the movie that takes place after this. (You can read my separate review for that here) The movie was a masterpiece, and watching it easily outweighed any issues I had with this show. I'd recommend watching this just because the movie was so great.
