Song: Kids In Love by Mayday Parade

Melody

“Hey, Melody,” I heard Tyler’s voice greet from behind me. I spun around to see him standing there, looking like he might throw up from nerves. He shoved his hands in his pockets and purposely avoided my eyes.

“Hey, Tyler,” I replied, giving him smile. He beamed back at me with the cutest little smile that made my heart stop. Why did he have to be so damn cute?

“Um, Melody, I was, uh… wondering if you would mind maybe showing me around,” he stammered, obviously very anxious. Was he asking me out? No, he couldn’t like me. He just wanted a tour around town.

“Yeah, sure. That’s sounds fun,” I heard myself reply. I hadn’t even had time to process the question and I had already said yes, but why would I complain?

We then decided on a time and he gave me his phone number so I could text him my address so him and his mum could pick me up. I was already nervous about this date, too. If I already felt like I was going to puke, how was I suppose to make through the actual… event? Was it even a date? God, this was confusing.

“How was school, Mel?” I questioned as Melody came through the front door. Linkin was staying after school for sports and Harmony had went over to one of her friends’ houses, so it was just Melody and me for awhile. It was pretty rare that I got time alone with just one of the kids.

“Pretty good, Dad. Is it ok if I go out with a friend on Saturday?” she asked as she gave me a quick hug. I could see the hope in her eyes, which made me want to give in without knowing who this ‘friend’ was.

“Who? Cory?” I questioned, knowing that it probably wasn’t Cory. If it was, she would’ve just flat out said ‘Cory’ instead of a ‘friend.’ It almost made me think she was going out with a boy, like a boyfriend boy, but she was too young to be dating, right? Chelsea and I hadn’t dated till we were in high school.

“No, someone else,” she replied, adverting my eyes. I gave her a look, telling her she needed to explain. “This guy, Tyler. He just moved here and he asked me if I would mind showing him around,” she explained.

“He asked you to show him around?” I repeated, trying to make sense of it. I was really trying to think back to when I was a teenager and what that probably meant.

“Yeah,” she told me slowly, obviously not understanding why I was questioning her. I might trust her, but I sure as hell didn’t trust any eighth grade guy who was interested in her.

“Is it a date?” I asked. I hated having to pester her with questions. She was a great kid and never did anything wrong. I guess I could be a bit over protective sometimes, but she was my little girl.

“I don’t know…” she trailed off. Her cheeks instantly turned a deep shade of red and an embarrassed little smile crept on her face. She ran her hand through her hair and avoided my eyes. Her behavior told me that she wanted it to be a date, but she just wasn’t sure if this Tyler was on the same page as her.

“Mel, you’re too young to be dating,” I told her, trying to sound stern. I had never been good at the ‘strict parent’ stuff. I mean, I always did what I thought was right, but I had never been able to be harsh about it.

“Dad, it’s just this one time. I’m sure he doesn’t like me anyway,” she murmured with shrug. Sometimes I really wished she thought more highly of herself. She reminded me a lot of Chelsea when we first met.

“You can go, but you don’t need to have a boyfriend at your age. Wait till you’re at least in high school,” I told her. I smile broke out on her face and she gave me another hug.

“Thank you, Dad,” she said when she let me go. She then pulled out her phone most likely to text Tyler and tell him she could go.

“Homework time,” I announced when she had put her phone down. She gave me a pout in an attempt to get out of homework. “You have to do it, Melody,” I ordered. She let out a groan, but ran upstairs anyway to get started.

I couldn’t believe she was actually old enough to even start thinking about dating. It seemed like just yesterday that I was holding her in my arms for the first time. Where the hell did time go?

“Hey, Oli,” Chelsea greeted as she entered the kitchen. She had been in her office all day working her latest book and I guess she had finally decided to join the rest of the world.

“Hey, babe. Did Melody mention anything to you about a boy named Tyler?” I asked her before planting a kiss on her forehead. I was so glad that we weren’t like most married couple that fall out of love after awhile. I still loved Chelsea just as much as I did when we first started dating.

“No, she didn’t. Why?” she replied, furrowing her brow in confusion. She sat down next to me at the table and placed her hands in her palms.

“She asked me if she could go out with him on Saturday and I’m kinda afraid it’s a date,” I admitted. Wow, I sounded like one of those way too overprotective parents that gave their children a way too sheltered life.

“You’re afraid its a date?” she asked, giving me a look like she thought I was being ridiculous. I thought it was a perfectly rational fear.

“Well, I just think she’s a little young to start dating. Don’t you?” I confessed. Wasn’t it common knowledge that thirteen was too young to have a boyfriend?

“Oliver, she’s a thirteen-year-old girl. She gonna be interested in guys and if this guy’s interested in her, too, then let them go out. We can’t protect her from everything,” she pointed out. She was right of course. She almost always was. It was like all mothers and wives had to be right at all times.

She may be right, but I didn’t want to admit it. I didn’t want Melody dating.
