Song: Grow Up by Paramore
Chelsea
“It’s nice to see you again, Tyler,” I greeted as I opened the door to see a very nervous Tyler standing in front of me. Tonight was the night we were having him over for dinner and I think I was the only one happy about it.
“It’s nice to see you, too, Mrs. Sykes,” he responded as I stepped aside to let him inside. I saw him wiped his hands against his jeans as Melody came racing down the steps.
“Hi, Melody,” Tyler greeted with a shy smile. It was obvious they were crazy for each other. The he immediately got bashful when she came around and the way she looked at him. I seriously didn’t know what Oliver had against him. He seemed like a nice guy and he really liked Melody. What was the problem?
“Mel, can you run up and get Harmony and Linkin?” I asked. My request got an aggravated sigh, but she did as I asked and ran up to get her siblings.
“So, how have you been, Tyler?” I asked, gesturing for him to follow me into the kitchen.
“Good. How have you been?” he replied politely. He even had good manners. This kid just seemed to become a better match for Melody every second.
“Good. We’re so glad you could make it tonight,” I told him. I of course was the only one glad about this, but he didn’t have to know that.
“Thank you for inviting me,” he responded again with all the politeness in the world. I think Oliver just didn’t like him because Melody having a boyfriend meant she was growing up.
“Oli, can you get the plates?” I asked as my husband came into the kitchen. He didn’t respond, though; he just started to open the cupboard in search for enough dishes.
“Hello, Mr. Sykes. It’s nice to see you again,” Tyler greeted awkwardly. Oliver didn’t acknowledge him, though. I think he was trying to pretend like he didn’t hear him even though they were only a few feet away.
“Don’t mind him, Tyler,” I told him apologetically as I walked into the dining room with the glasses. Thankfully, Melody came down with the twins in toe before I could be too embarrassed by Oliver actions.
After all the food was dished out, we sat down at the table and started to eat. Melody had obviously sat next to Tyler and I could see them looking at each other every so often, which I thought was cute. The first few minutes of the meal, everyone was silent, though. I could tell Harmony and Linkin just felt awkward being included in this and that Oliver was trying to avoid any contact with Tyler since he was set on being a jerk to the kid.
“So, Tyler, what’s your favorite subject in school?” I asked, breaking the quietness. He looked up from his plate looking nervous. I didn’t mean to put him on the spot, but we had invited him over to get to know him better and that wasn’t going to happen if he just stared at his food the whole time.
“Um, I really like English,” he responded. His answer made me smile since I had always loved English myself and of course was now an author.
“Do you wanna do something with English when you get out of school?” I questioned. I was kind of hoping he’d want to be an author so I would know what to talk to him about.
“Yeah, I wanna be an English teacher,” he answered with smile. I could see him as a good teacher. He seemed to be naturally outgoing. Well, except in front of Melody.
“Mum’s an author,” Melody interjected proudly. I guess my career hadn’t come up in their conversations because he looked at me in shock.
“Really? What do you write?” he asked with excitement in his voice. His eagerness made a smile curl onto my lips. I had never been able to get any of the kids into reading, but it looked like I didn’t have to since I just found a kid who loved writing as much as I did.
“Romance novels. Nothing you’ve heard of I’m sure,” I replied modestly. I wasn’t really that popular and I’m sure a teenage boy had no desire to read some love story.
“Don’t listen to her. She’s like the British female version of Nicolas Sparks,” Harmony insisted. I was glad she was finally talking because usually she was very chatty at dinner.
“That’s really cool,” Tyler told me. He suddenly seemed a bit more comfortable until Oliver sent him a glare. God, I wanted to strangle him sometimes. Couldn’t he just be happy for our daughter?
The rest of the dinner was filled with me doing most of the talking since Oliver refused to say one word. He was acting really childish. “Oliver, can you help me with dishes?” I asked when everyone’s plate was cleaned off. He then followed me obediently into the kitchen.
“Do you have to be so rude to him?” I questioned in an angry whisper once we were safely in the kitchen. I was sick of him being so mean to someone he barely knew.
“I just don’t like him,” he responded with a shrug. I really wished he could just see that Melody was happy and that was what mattered the most.
“Why not?” I asked, clearly outraged. When he didn’t reply, I answered for him because I knew the answer. “Because if Melody has a boyfriend, that means she’s growing, that’s why,” I retorted before walking out of the kitchen and leaving him speechless.
