Song: To Die For by Tonight Alive
Melody
“You know, you never got to play me that song the other day,” Tyler pointed out. I had again invited him to our band practice and he had obviously brought Jake along. We were currently taking a break from our practice.
“You’re right I didn’t, but all I have are the cords. I haven’t even shown it to the guys yet,” I replied, hoping he wouldn’t prod me any further. I had wanted him to be the first one to hear the song, not him, Jake, Jared, Cory, and Elliot.
“I don’t care. I wanna hear it,” he insisted. I let out a sigh, but I could feel a small smile appear on my lips. He didn’t even have to push me any further. There was no way I couldn’t give into him.
“Ok, fine,” I replied, causing him to smile. I walked over to the case my acoustic guitar was in and pulled it out. “Let’s go upstairs, though,” I added. The guys were talking so loudly that I didn’t think he’d be about to hear me. He nodded and followed me up the basement steps.
Thankfully, my mum was in her office, my dad was out with Uncle Nicholls, and Linkin and Harmony were both out with friends, so it was just us. I sat down on the couch and took a deep breath. The song I had wanted him to hear was something I had written after the dance. It had a lot of dancing references and was more of a story between a boy and a girl. While none of the song actually happened to us, I had seen a couple there and it had sparked my imagination.
“She's to die for, a little murder on the dance floor,” I began to sing and strum on my guitar. I ended up closing my eyes a lot because I was kind of nervous. I had never written a song like that one and I was anxious to hear what he thought about it.
When I was finished, I looked over at him to see him grinning. “You are literally so talented. What did you name the song?” he told me. The compliment made my cheeks get hot. I swear, every time he told me how I was ‘talented’ I got more embarrassed. To be honest, I loved the affect he had on me.
“I think I’m gonna name it ‘To Die For,’” I replied. Besides the fact that the phrase was repeated in the song multiple times, I liked the way it sounded.
“I like it,” he responded before leaning in to plant his lips on top of mine. I felt my eyes flutter closed as his soft lips pressed against mine and the pure euphoria took over my mind.
“You seriously ditched us to go make out with your boyfriend, Mel?” I heard Cory scold, causing us to pull away from each other. My cheeks again felt like lava had landed on them.
“We were taking a break anyway,” I muttered in defense. I grabbed my guitar by the neck and started to stand up. My friends always seemed to pick the wrong times to interrupt us.
“Well, get your ass back down here so we can finished practicing,” he replied, gesturing for us to go back down to the basement. He could be so pushy sometimes. Instead of voicing my opinion and fighting with him, I started walking down the basement steps with Tyler in toe.
“So, you guys are playing an actual show in a few weeks?” Jake was asking Elliot. I had to say he looked pretty impressed. I guess only be thirteen and already having the opportunity to play at an actual venue was pretty cool.
“Yep. Melody’s dad know the owner of some venue. We only get about twenty minutes, but it’s better than nothing,” Elliot answered with a proud grin. I had overheard his mum telling my mum how he’s been practicing the songs we had decided on nonstop, so I knew he was pretty excited about the whole thing.
“What songs are you going to play?”
“Well, we have two of our own, which are ‘My Favourite Thing’ and ‘What Are You So Scared Of?’ and we were planning on covering ‘The Best Thing (That Never Happened)’ by We Are The In Crowd, ‘Just Tonight’ by The Pretty Reckless, and ‘I’m No Good’ by New Years Day,” Jared answered. We had almost all of the songs down so far, but we still insisted on getting together all the time to practice.
“That’s so awesome. I could never do that,” Jake responded. I could tell he meant because there were going to so many people who hadn’t even heard of us watching. My opinion was that if my dad could do it, so could I.
“Well, I’m sure we’ll suck, but practice makes perfect,” Elliot replied. I could sense the nerves radiating off of him, but I knew as soon as we got up there, we’d be fine. Even if we did suck, which was probably would, we would have more shows to impress people.
“Maybe I can convince my mum to drive me here to see you guys play,” Jake suggested. I had to admit even though I had only known Jake for a day and a half, it would be nice to see as many familiar faces in the crowd as possible.
“That would be cool. It would be nice to actually know a few people watching us play,” Jared responded, practically reading my mind. I swear, after knowing these guys for so long, we sometimes had the same thoughts at the same time. It was kind of weird, actually.
“I think she’d be up for it. It would give her an excuse to hang out with Tyler’s mum,” he joked. I had noticed that Tyler’s mum and Jake’s mum seemed to be pretty good friends. Tyler had told me that him and Jake had been best friends since first grade, so I guess that would explain their closeness.
“Sounds like a plan, then,” Tyler announced. I was really glad that everyone was getting along well. Not just my friends and Tyler, but my friends and Jake. I think I had even made a new friend in Jake even though it had only been a day. Now, we just had to figure something out for Tyler’s birthday tomorrow.
