Song: I'm Sorry by The Maine
Melody
“Mel, are we gonna eat cake before Jake has to leave or what?” Cory questioned with rudeness laced in his voice. If he wasn’t my best friend, I think I would’ve killed him a long time ago.
“Yeah. I’ll go get it,” I responded with a huge smile on my face. After the basement thing with Tyler, I couldn’t seem to wipe it off of my face. He just made me so…joyful, happy, cheery. Any positive emotion you could name, I felt it around Tyler. I felt like I was floating on cloud 9.
I then ran off the the kitchen and took the ice cream cake out of the refrigerator. I had it in the fridge so it wouldn’t be rock hard when it came time to eat, but it would still be cold. Tyler had mentioned to me once that he loved ice cream cake and Jake had confirmed it. I had to admit that it did look pretty damn good. I decided to come back for plates and forks, instead grabbing candles from a cabinet.
When I arrived back in the living room, everyone was talking amongst themselves. Tyler and Jake were standing right in front of the doorway, which caused me to catch what they were saying. “Leah would be jealous if she knew another girl was doing all this for you,” Jake was saying with grin. The mention of another girl made me stop dead in my tracks. Who the fuck was Leah? Did Tyler have some other girl waiting for back in London?
I tried to calm myself down and tell myself it was just a friend of his or something, but what he said next made me panic even more. “You didn’t tell her about Melody, did you?” Tyler asked, suddenly seeming very alert.
“No, of course not. She doesn’t need to know,” Jake responded, still grinning. His replied made me turn around and run upstairs to my room, still holding the ice cream cake.
When I made it to my room, I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes. How could he lead me on like this? If he had a girlfriend back in London, why did he ask me out? I slammed the cake box down on my nightstand and curled up on my bed. I buried my face into my black pillow case, knowing that when I got back up my makeup would be beyond smeared. I started crying so hard that I could hardly breath. Why were boys so stupid? Why did I have to like him so much? How could he do this to me? Everything seemed so genuine and now I find out that I was just someone for him to play around with while he was away from his girlfriend.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. I didn’t answer, but whoever it was just came in anyway. When I looked up, I saw my dad standing in the door, looking at me with sadness in his eyes. It was obvious something was very wrong. I never cry unless I have a damn good reason. “What happened, love?” he questioned, walking over to sit down on the dark purple bedspread next to me.
“You were right,” I choked out in between short, choppy breaths. I ran my pointer fingers under my eyes to get rid of tears, only to turn my fingers black from my stupid makeup. I probably looked like a raccoon. I sat up slowly and he put a tattooed arm around my shoulders. I had always been closer to my dad than my mum, so having him comfort me didn’t feel weird at all.
“About what?” he asked. I could kind of tell he knew what he was right about, but he didn’t want to just assume and get me angry. I had been angry at him too much over the last month or so.
“About Tyler,” I replied. I never thought I’d be crying over him. He seemed like the perfect match for me, so why would he do this to us? I thought we had something special. Why had he asked me to be his girlfriend, if he already had one? Why would he risk two relationships?
“What happened?” he asked soothing. He started rubbing my back comfortingly. Apparently, when I was a baby, rubbing my back calmed me down and it still seemed to do the trick, so on the rare occasions when I cried, it was the first thing my parents tried.
“I…I went to go get th…the cake and when I came back I…I overheard Tyler an…and jake talking about some girl named Leah and how she…she’d be jealous if she knew I threw him a party an…and Ty…Tyler got all panicky and asked if he had told he…her about me and Jake said she did…didn’t need to know,” I explained in a stammer, my breathing still irregular from crying. I hated having all these emotions especially over so asshole of a guy.
“As much as it does sound like he’s being a dick and going out with some other girl, too, and as much as I don’t want you seeing this kid, maybe you need to give him a chance to explain. You’re mum’s right, he’s seems like a nice boy and he deserves the chance to justify what he said. I’d hate to see you so upset over nothing,” he encouraged. I looked up at him hesitantly. Was he really admitting that he might have been wrong for disrespecting Tyler? It was a surprise, but the whole night seemed to be one big surprise.
I let out a sigh. To be honest, at the moment, I never wanted to see his face again. He was such a fucking jerk. He led me on. But my dad was right. He deserved the chance to explain himself. “I know it’ll be hard to hear his side, but believe me, I’ve been in his shoes. You mum once got mad at me because I made a lot of decisions she didn’t like, like I quit school and started smoking and I was acting like a jerk, and she didn’t talk to me for over week. Just think, if we never made up, you, and you brother, and sister wouldn’t be here, so don’t be so quick to dismiss him just because of something you overheard. Your relationship could lead to something wonderful,” he added before kissing my forehead and walking out of my room. Even though I was a bit shocked about the fact that he was encouraging me to go makeup with Tyler, he was right of course. This all could just be a misunderstanding, but how was I even suppose to even try to listen to him? He had let me down.
