Song: In Friends We Trust by Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!

Tyler

“Tyler, can you come downstairs?” my mum called up to me. Melody had just texted me and asked if she could come over because she had written a new song and wanted my opinion on it, so I was going downstairs anyway to check with my mum.

Instead of answering, I just jogged down the steps. “Hey Mum, can I have Melody over?” I asked in a yell. She was in the living room so she still couldn’t hear me if I spoke in a normal tone.

“Sure, but can you come in here?” she replied in an overly excited voice. I quickly texted Melody back to tell her she could come over as I walked into our living room. I looked up to see from my phone to see about the last thing I expected. In our living room was Jake and his mum.

“What’re you doing here?” I questioned as he pulled me into a friendly hug. I had seriously missed my best friend way too much. I was going to kill him for not telling me he was coming.

“We came to surprise you for your birthday,” he exclaimed excitedly. With the move and the whole thing with Melody I had almost forgotten my birthday was Sunday.

“Why didn’t you say you were coming?” I asked, still in astonishment. It was kind of surreal that he was standing before me when I had been questioning the next time I would see him.

“It wouldn’t be a surprise then, butt hole,” he replied, causing his mum to give him a disapproving look. He just shrugged it off, though. I was surprised that Jake’s mum still tried to calm her crazy son down after over thirteen years.

“True. You wanna go upstairs?” I replied. Both our mothers were staring at us and my mum’s grin was starting to freak me out.

“Sure. Have you decorated your room yet?” he asked. I had barely finished unpacking my stuff, let alone actually making the room look nice.

“I started to put some poster up, but not really,” I responded as we made our way up the stairs. When we got to my room, I plopped down on my bed and Jake claimed my desk chair.

“This is a lot bigger than your old room,” he commented, looking around at the mostly empty walls. When my mum got transferred, she had gotten a raise so we had gotten a slightly larger house than our old one.

I was about to replied when there was a knock at my door. I was expecting it to be my mum to annoy us unintentionally, but when I swung the door open, I saw Melody standing on the other side. I had almost forgot I invited her over about fifteen minutes. “Hey,” I greeted, a smile forming on my face. I reached over to give her a quick kiss on cheek before letting her in.

“Melody, this is Jake. Jake this is Melody,” I introduced as Melody set the guitar case she had been holding on my floor. I doubted she would showing me that song with Jake there. She seemed really shy when it came to singing in front of people.

“Nice to meet you. You’re all Ty talks about,” Jake told Melody, causing my cheeks to turn hot. “All good things, of course,” he added when Melody’s face also seemed to get a bit red. She suddenly had become very shy. I guess she wasn’t very open around new people. She awkwardly sat down on my bed next to me and pulled at her Bring Me The Horizon t-shirt.

“What’s your shirt say?” Jake questioned when he saw her playing with it. He leaned in as if trying to get a better look.

“Um, it’s this band my dad’s in,” she replied quickly without really answering the question. The shirt read ‘I can’t down my demons they know how to swim’ with the Bring  Me The Horizon logo under it. I could see where she got her ability to write lyrics. Her dad’s lyrics were amazing. She had shown me their album Sempiternal and while I was totally into the style of music, I had to admit that their lyrics were beautiful.

“You’re dad’s in a band?” he asked in awe. Even though Melody kept telling me that it was really nothing big, it still sounded really cool to other people. “That’s awesome,” he added when she nodded in response. “And you play guitar?” he questioned, gesturing to her guitar.

“Yep,” she responded with a proud nod. Even if her dad was a jerk to me, she was pretty proud of him and I would be, too. Not many people can say that their parents were living their dream.

“That’s really cool,” Jake commented happily. “So, what’re you doing for your birthday besides spending it with me, of course?” he asked conceitedly, changing the subject abruptly. Leave it to him to jump from subject to subject with no transition.

“You never told me your birthday’s coming up. When is it?” Melody told me. The subject had never come up and it didn’t want to just come out and tell her. That was like asking for a gift or something.

“It’s sunday,” I replied with a shrug. I hadn’t been planning on doing much that day and I was kind of hoping neither of them were going to make a big deal about this.

“You should’ve told me,” she responded, slapping my arm playfully. A beautiful smile formed on her face and I would’ve kissed her if Jake hadn’t been there.

“Some boyfriend you’ve got. Doesn’t even tell you his own birthday,” Jake said, shaking his head at me. Birthdays really weren’t too big a deal to me, but Jake had always insisted on throwing me a party of some sort. I was kind of hoping he wouldn’t. While it was a nice gesture, I would rather just sit in my room watching movies or something.

“So, what are you doing?” Melody asked with excitement in her voice. Why people get so excited over birthdays was beyond me.

“Nothing really,” I responded with a shrug, hoping they would drop it. Even if they wanted to give me a party, I really didn’t have enough friends here to make a party, which was finally turning out to be a good thing.

“Oh, we’re doing something,” Jake argued, earning an eager nod from Melody. Well, it was nice to see my best friend and my girlfriend getting along, but why did it have to be over my stupid birthday?
