Sunday

It's fathers day.

I couldn't find dad anywhere this morning so I just went to church without wishing him a happy fathers day. Got congratulated for being in the Amarillo Globe Newspaper. Didn't know I was in the newspaper. Found out it was just a recap of all previous spotlight students.

Monday

I've never liked the story of god testing Abraham by sending him to sacrifice his son. I didn't like Abraham for being willing to do so, or the god that expected him to. Today I listened to the same story again, but I found what was, as far as I know at least, a new perspective. I'm pretty sure this occurred in the Old Testament. When it was all: Fear god! or else. What if in being prepared to sacrifice his own son, Abraham actually failed the test put before him. Abraham proved that he would rather sacrifice his son than dealing with the "or else". That is would have been selfish had the person being sacrificed been a complete stranger, but it being his own son elevates the degree exponentially.

God so loved the world that he sacrificed his own son? Bull. God did not sacrifice his own son. He sets the parimiters by which forgivnes can be "earned". It is like when a child gets a pet. We are the puppy, Jesus is the child, and God the parent. Parents use pets as ways to teach their kids responsibility. When the puppy urinates on the carpet, the child will try to defend the puppy from being scolded because of their tendency for affection and own paternal instinct to protect. Parents set the parameters for scolding and disciplining.

God actively desire to forgive our sins. He needed to understand how strongly Jesus cared for us, the extent he would go to to protect us. God is God, he always knew that Jesus would rise from the dead. Jesus sacrificed his own life for us. That is why we are forgiven. Not because of some prophetic significance of sacrifice. But because God loves Jesus, and Jesus loves us. God protects us like a parent protects the doll that their child cannot sleep without.

There is no evidence to think that Jesus' sacrifice in any way changed how god feels towards us. But his love ensures us Gods restraint.
