Tobias' POV
I lunge for the chest, my heart and mind racing each other for a faster tempo.
I couldn't believe I had almost missed it!
I had been too busy and caught up in my sightings of Peter that I had totally forgotten my purpose for leaving Christina's generator in the first place.
I reach the chest with an enlightened heart now and lift it's top open which causes for a creaky squeak to come from the chest. I honestly didn't even really care about making too much noise in that moment. I was going to gain a medkit and be able to heal Tris up. That was all I could think about suddenly.
Once I open the chest there are randomly old-looking tools and parchment everywhere within the chest and my gaze files over the items.
I then take one of my hands and rummage through the tools and parchment, creating a clattering noise of course while at it but I didn't care.
But I should care. I tell myself provocatively.
At last I finally feel my hand hit something hard and metal from at the bottom of the chest and instantaneously my blood runs cold.
...?
I grasp at the metal-feeling-object, before then heaving the item up and out of the chest.
Waveringly, I pull out nothing but a mere metal toolbox and immediately my heart sags and my breath slows.
W-Wait, what?
I stare at the toolbox, it's shape and essence beginning to do nothing but agitate me now.
Perhaps I should keep digging?
I hurriedly place down the toolbox and continue my searching through the chest but nothing good comes of it unfortunately.
Tools and parchment of paper is all that remain and as I lean back from the chest I can't help but feel a new angering feeling start to penetrate me.
All of this for nothing but a pathetic toolbox?
I sigh and try to calm my nerves but I knew I was getting to get too worked up now. I was terribly unsatisfied.
But, what about Tris? What am I going to tell her?
I curl my hands into fists now as I rise to my feet, my eyes scanning over the forsaken chest just once more and I bite the inside of my lip.
D***!
Suddenly though I am interrupted by an intensely loud blare just nearby and I tense up.
Oh S***.
A light then illuminates itself from over the tops of the trees just up ahead of me and I slam the chest's lid shut out of anger and newly rising fear.
Christina had finished the generator. And she had lit it, just like I had seen Peter do with his gen.
My mind whirls and I stagger for a moment out of confusion on what to do. I then turn vigorously and just start towards Tris' direction; the toolbox and Christina forgotten.
My mind pulses and my legs race, nothing but trees and silver mist just flying by me. I hurry around trunk after trunk until I finally begin to recognize where I am and I instantly notice the long wall-like fence that contained us within this forsaken place.
I run along the fence until I see the corner up ahead and my heart resonates.
I jerk around next to at last spot my beautiful Tris. She was still laying up against the trunk of a tree where I had left her but for some reason her eyes were closed.
I blink and rush to her side, my mind roaring at me and my hands finding hers.
It is then that she finally lifts her head at my touch and I exhale in relief on that fact that she was still alive and okay.
"Tris!" I groan longingly to her as I then scoop her up into my filthy lap, my hands and arms covered with nothing but black oil and dirt from the generator.
Her eyes are tired and sleepy for only a few moments but then they light up in enthrallment and want for me and a satisfactory feeling claims my whole body.
"Tobias, you're back already!" She breathes into me as she cushions her head into the crook of my neck and I smile lightly out of pleasure, despite our horrible situation and setting we were in together.
"I-I thought you'd be longer?" She asks next as she sits up more, and I contently notice how her voice is sounding better now.
"Wait, wait, enough about me. You seem to be sounding a whole lot better now, Tris." I state next with a brightening tempo and I also begin to notice how her wounds didn't seem quite as bad as they had the last time I saw them.
She looked... healed?
"Oh, yeah!" She finally then comes to attention and directs her gaze down onto her body. "I had forgotten that I had my perks! Remember?" She hurriedly reaches for her small device from within her pocket and I nod as I recall the 'abilities' this piece of technology gave us.
"Anyways, one of my perks is Self-Heal! It's where I get to heal myself without a medkit!" She at last explains and instantly an onset of new relief bestows itself upon me and I smile. "Tris, that's wonderful! I'm so glad you're okay." I breathe in disbelief, and she wraps her arms around me.
"How uh, would one Self-Heal anyway though? What did you do for it?" I now suddenly wonder and she sits back and gives me a pondering look. "Well it's rather difficult to explain. Just like Peter usually says.. I kinda just did it, you know? I used some herbs and some botany knowledge to wrap my wounds in pulps and honestly it started to make me feel better within moments." She describes with a rather fascinated gleam within her eyes and I just shrug. "Well at least you're okay. That's all that matters."
I then can't help but think back to my toolbox I had found within the chest just earlier ago.
So much for a medkit. I think rather luckily and it is then that Tris pulls away from our embrace and she casts me a newly worried look. "Wait, Tobias, so where's Christina?" She asks now and her voice is low and uptight.
At this I suddenly get to my feet, my mind whirling back to the last time I had seen Christina. She had still been working on the generator when I had left her to go looking for a chest...
But then she finished it. She finished the generator and lit it up. Wouldn't she have then known to head back for Tris?
My head was boggling with possibilities for Christina's whereabouts now. She surely couldn't be too far off could she?
"Wait so you basically just left her?" Tris' voice snaps my attention back onto her and I frown rather coyly. "I-I thought she was behind me the whole time, Tris, honestly." I now try to state to her but she only rolls her eyes at me. "Well obviously she wasn't behind you! And I know you Tobias, you're always wary of other people's whereabouts.. but not this time." She flashes at me. "And I think it's because you might have been too focused on someone else, like me." She crosses her arms now in disapproval and exasperation before I can even open my mouth.
"Tris, look, you have to believe me-!" I try and reason with her but she only cuts me off. "Tobias, listen to me." She steps closer to me and now our faces are just inches apart from each other. I can't help but want to kiss her and I know she realizes this because she gives me a pitied look. "I know you care about me, but you have to care about others just as much, okay?" She finally expresses and with this I just bite my inner lip.
How could I? How could I care about others when someone like Tris was endangered or needed protecting? I knew she was only trying to help me but I didn't want her advice. I wanted to protect her only and give her all of my devotion.
"S-So come on, we have to go find her before someone else does." Tris then finally exploits and immediately I give her a nod in response.
The two of us then turn and begin trekking through the dark grounds again, me taking the lead and her following closely behind. We would have to be silent and as cautious as ever.
