LOVE HURTS

That evening everyone went to bed early. Paige couldn't sleep and Conner had the look out shift. Conner noticed her tossing and turning on the floor. He laughed quietly so as to not wake up the others. He went and lay himself next to her on the floor and began to whisper to her." You're making so much noise crazy girl."

Paige looked annoyed but amused as well." I can't sleep creep."

"What's bugging you?"

"Nothing."

"Oh. Okay. You don't want to tell me."

Paige who had been talking with her face turned away from him turned to face him. She looked into his green eyes." I guess I'm scared. Hearing how dangerous Dukilian is from my parents scares me a little."

"Yeah it frightened me a bit too but I know we can survive this."

"Yeah," she smiled.

Conner looked at her face for a while. He looked as if he was admiring her face. Who would blame him. Paige was gorgeous. Growing up many guys in middle school would fight to sit close to her in the class. In the cafeteria they would actually plead to sit with her during lunch. Paige didn't like that. She wanted to maintain a sense of dignity so she read a lot to maintain an academic identity. She didn't have many friends. It made her feel weird. She then met Erin who became not only her best friend but her only true school friend. With time time their relationship blossomed into a romantic one. Now Conner a friend she was forced to forget was back in her life. This made her feel happy at the same time unsettled. Maybe those feelings she assumed were as a result of being in an affection demanding situation were real. "Conner why are you looking at me like that?"

"I'm sorry. I can't help myself. Sometimes I get lost in your eyes. They are so beautiful.."

"Conner."

"I know I know. It makes you feel uncomfortable but you're flawless. The way your hair complements your eyes is breathtaking. The detail on your face is just amazing. You know what hurts the most," he took a breath," is knowing that my entire heart is telling me it's drawn to you but you think it's just because we're in a dangerous situation. I know that there's Erin as well so it makes my heart shatter even more. It actually troubles me. I know we don't know if he's out there but I want us to find him for your sake. I think you need him. It scares me to think that when we find him I have to let you go. That's how much I care about you. I can't be selfish with you. I've never been in love but with you Paige I feel something I can't explain. I just know now that my existence without you is meaningless. That's why I'm fighting and I'll fight with every ounce of my existence for you to survive."

Paige remained silent and looked up to the ceiling. She had a thought of him dying because of her. He would be trying to protect her and then lose his own life." Conner no. You're my best friend. I don't want you to keep saying those things." She looked at him. He looked pale now. How would any guy feel after being tossed into the friend zone? His eyes showed that he wanted Paige to acknowledge that her feelings for him might be real.

"Okay," he answered softly." Let me go patrol the rooms." He stood up and left. Paige cried silently. She knew she loved him. Love hurts. The thought of breaking Conner's heart made her heart sick. She had to do what she could to protect him. Paige knew rejecting him would make him take time to think when the need to think arose. It was the first time she cried about denouncing a boy. She would do it to other guys and not even flinch. Now her cheeks were wet because of tears. Due to her experience with Conner when they were at the university she knew he was the kind of guy who would not break down when a girl rejected him. He would actually over look it and focus on the task at hand. He had done it whilst they were at the university. Conner was rejected by a girl he met at the university but he managed to work with her and scored a good grade. What was funny about that story was that the girl ended up pining over him when he came back the second semester well built and more confident. He was now then desirable to most girls but he kept his cool and didn't become pompous. Paige commended that. He just kept to himself. The rumour of his rejection, Paige learnt from Erin. Apparently Erin disliked him. She didn't really know why. Erin's reasons were absurd. Paige finally fell asleep.

I definitely can relate with Conner. There was a time when I liked a girl I couldn't have. I believe most of you guys know the theory that states a guy and a girl can't be best friends without one falling for the other. I don't know how far true it is but in my case it happened.
