Lauren rolled over, groaning at her phone's buzzing, as she checked the time.
6:30 AM.
She couldn't believe she had a huge audition that day, this was going to change her life if she booked the job, and she was already at the screen test stage, meaning if she was successful, she could change her life for the better.
To make things better, today was her birthday.
Here ya go Lauren, here's to 31 years and many more, she thought as she hauled herself out of bed.
She noticed Joey's motionless form on his side of the bed, sprawled out on the bed. Lauren found it weird, he never overslept on any special occasion. Not birthdays, anniversaries for every small milestone they hit, not even half birthdays.
Lauren slowly transformed from a bed beast to a human in the bathroom, ending with throwing some makeup on. She stuffed everything she needed in her purse, half hoping Joey would wake up and scream happy birthday into her face.
"Joey?" she gently shook him to consciousness.
"What?" he groaned, covering his face with his pillow.
Lauren replied quietly through the dim room, "I'm heading off to my audition, I'll be back by lunch, okay?"
"Okay baby..." he rolled over, "Good luck."
"Thanks babe," she smiled and kissed him on the side of his head before walking out of the room.
~~~
"I'm home!" Lauren yelled through the apartment as Diane ran up to greet her. She smiled as she picked the chihuahua up, "Aww look at you, Big D! Where's Daddy?"
Diane made no answer, not one that Lauren understood anyway, so she walked into her and Joey's room, only to find him in the same state she left him in- asleep.
She sighed and let Diane down on the floor, as much as Lauren hated to doubt Joey, she was seriously considering the possibility of him forgetting her birthday.
"Joey," she said, dumping her purse on her side of the bed.
"Hmmm?" he mumbled.
"Joey wake up, it's one in the afternoon," Lauren didn't hesitate to pull off her stifling audition shirt in front of a sleepy Joey, quickly changing into her unicorn shirt and sweatpants.
Joey rolled over, hazily opening his eyes, "Oh hey, how did the audition go?"
"It was fine," she replied shortly. Lauren didn't want to be reminded of the screen test, she was positive that she screwed the biggest audition of her life, on her birthday out of all the days. Her excuse was she was a little bit preoccupied with the fact that Joey seemed to have forgotten her birthday, but she never let herself have excuses, that was how people always say she pushed herself too hard.
He sat up, swinging himself out of bed, still only in his boxers, and walked to the bathroom to get ready, "Did you bring home anything to eat or should we eat out?"
Did he just ask me if I brought home anything to eat?
"No, I didn't bring home anything to eat," she replied sarcastically, "And I don't feel like eating out at all."
"Well, I can cook," he yelled from the bathroom, "What do you feel like eating?"
Ugh, she thought, this is going to be a long day.
~~~
Lauren tried dropping hints at him the whole day, subliminally if she was under control, and when he still couldn't get the clue, she might have pushed him a little bit further than she intended to, but he still remained clueless. He treated it as if it were any other day.
They got on with work the whole day, Lauren snuggled with Diane and worked on her resume, while Joey was emailing back and forth with his agent about an audition he was going to take the following week. She kept glancing at him, and he kept glancing at his phone. Lauren sighed, people had been blowing her phone up with birthday wishes, and he didn't notice one bit.
Frustrated, she decided to go back into her room for a quick nap, giving up on capturing Joey's attention. Just as she walked down the corridor to their room, two strong arms suddenly wrapped themselves around her waist.
"Did you seriously think I'd forget your big day?" Joey whispered into her ear.
Lauren turned around, letting out a sigh of relief, "I was honestly thinking about that possibility."
He pressed his lips softly onto hers, she kissed back, gently, but surely, before she broke the kiss, "Did you catch the not-so-subtle hints I was dropping you?"
Joey chuckled, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear, "I did, every single one of them. Now, I have plans for us tonight."
"Oh so now you have plans?" Lauren teased him, giggling.
"Get changed into something nice, I'll be taking you out to dinner, then we can go dancing, lastly we come home and do whatever you want," he grinned, kissing her forehead.
Lauren laughed, at his cuteness, and mostly her own stupidity for doubting Joey. The worries she had earlier all washed away as she turned around to get changed.
"Lo?"
"Yeah?" she spun around, facing him again.
"Happy birthday."
~~~
The happiest of birthdays to the one and only Lauren Lopez! That girl is such an inspiration and one badass woman! So happy she shares her big day with the world for International Women's Day! (I'm honestly hoping Joey proposes today XP)
