I awake from my sleep when I hear loud crying and multiple people's voices at once. The only thing that startled me was the beeping sound of the heart monitor declaring someone was dying. I feel hands pulling me away from Layne, and out the doorway. I scream, but I can't hear myself.

It's all a dream... just a dream...

I can only see Layne through the window and I could only see his feet. I see them pull out those things that shock you. I look at the heart monitor and panicked.

I felt the same pulling on my arm once again and hear Vanessa's cry over mine. I was pulled into a different waiting room than before and I sit with my head in my hands. crying and bawling and screaming. I try to breathe, I cover my mouth and pull out my phone and put my earbuds in. You know what I said

"earbuds in, world out"

It was the day of court and I had tear stained eyes and messy hair. I hadn't slept in  a while and it sure was obvious. I pulled out a burgundy dress that mom had picked up with my brown ankle boots. I flat ironed my hair before I curled it and everything was ready when mom walked into my room.

"ready?"
I nodded while taking my phone and putting it in a purse that matched my boots. I walked to the car with mom in silence, along with the whole ride there. we arrived and I couldn't spot dad's car. this was going to be a long session.

not much happened in there, only the fact that he wasn't putten in jail (which didn't surprise me. every time he does something that he needs to go to jail for he ends up getting " supervised time" with me or "deduction of custody" for a month.). The judge said he would get his supervised time on wednesdays and fridays for a month, then we will try a new route. He lost custody until further notice and My brother and the rest of the kids will be staying with their aunt under a strict "no contact" order. I didn't get the chance to talk to dad, but he kept giving me frequent glares. we could discuss it tomorrow.

the second I opened the door, I felt the vibration of my phone on my sides. I pull it out to see Vanessa printed across the screen and answered it immediately, putting it on speaker for mom to hear .

"hello?"

"Maci, we need you here immediately."

"why? what is hap-"

"just get here as quick as you can, I'll explain when you get here."

"okay, see you there."

I hang up and mom starts driving towards the hospital. I'm worried and stuck in the panic of Layne. I arrive to the sound of Vanessa crying and breaking down. I see the doctor and grab her by the side of the arm.

"may I help you?"

"yes. Layne R-Roberts? is he alright?"

she sat me down in a chair and put her hand on my shoulder.

"i'm sorry. His brain was swelling so rapidly we couldn't save him. I'm sorry. And do you know a Maci?"

"that's me." i said with a little hope in my voice.

"layne said something about you. . . before he passed. . .something about a book?"

"the book?"

"I couldn't tell what he was saying. he asked for you and then said book."

I nodded and went back into the parking lot. i got in the car and mom was on her phone. she looked up at me and the tears in my eyes.

"drive."

she read my mind and took me home.
