I woke the next morning, to the sun streaming through the window, Jessie's naked body clinging to mine and her slow steady breaths attacking my neck. I sighed in contentment before checking my phone for the time. The brightness eliminating from my phone blinded me. My clock read 8.13. Mum, Dad and the kids would be here at 11.30, so Jess and I would leave at 11 to pick them up at the airport. I was running late, I had so much to do. I peeled myself from Jessie's side and replaced my body with my pillow, managing not to disturb her sleeping body.
I quickly hopped into the shower, washing my hair and body as quickly as possible and pulled on some simple clothes. I ran down the stairs to the utility room and grabbed some fresh bedding, taking the stairs two at a time on the way back up. We only had 2 guests bedrooms and Cameron most definitely had to get one, I mean he had cancer. That thought made my eyes go watery and I couldn't see what I was doing. I had to push those thoughts to the back of my mind. I knew Cammy was stronger than that. I finished changing the sheets in one rooms and started on the other. By the time I had finished I had a plan. Mum and dad could have one of the guests and Lexi could sleep between them, she loved doing that anyways and Cam could have the other one. I jumped back in the car and drove into town to purchase a sofa bed. Lacey could sleep there, we had a big living room.
"Sweet Lord," I muttered under my breath as I tried to build what should be a simple structure.
"What's wrong baby?" Jessie asked, standing at the doorway looking hot with her bed head and only the large t-shirt on that I had wore last night.
"These are supposed to instruct you how to build it, not destruct your perception of the world." I was really pretty frustrated and very pissed at the matter.
"Baby, they're upside down," Jess told me, trying not to laugh. This pissed me off even more and I stood up.
"I need to go get more food and comics and new games for Cameron," I said.
"Rowan, you're fussing too much. That's the last thing he will want. He'll want everyone to act normal," Jessie sighed, wrapping her arms around my waist.
"I still have to go," I informed her and checked my watch. "Get ready while I'm away yeah. It's already 9.30."
I went to Sainsbury's and picked up lots of food. Meat, vegetables, fruit, potatoes, pasta, and lots of sweets, crisps and chocolate. I also got all the necessities like bread, butter, milk. I even got Cameron's favourite cereal. Lucky Charms. I remember when we were younger we always used to fight over who got the toy. I remember one day we were both pulling the box and it ripped sending Lucky Charms everywhere. Let's just say mum and dad weren't too pleased. It was funny looking back, it seemed to make all the big things in my life look so small and all the small things all the more important. I went to get some flower for mum. She loved purple orchids. The flowers were right in front of magazines and Jessie's image on the front of one caught my eye. It was about her and I yesterday. I threw it in the trolley. I also grabbed some other gossip magazines for mum and one of those little kids ones with a few toys attached to the front for Lexi. I then found myself wandering down the games isle, picking up the latest shooting games for Cam. I'd pop around to Taylor's on the way home and get my PlayStation.
"Row? Is that you?" Jessie asked when I finally got home.
"Yes. Jess, what time is it?"
"Almost quarter to."
"Shoot." I left the bags there and took the stairs 2 at a time. I set up the PlayStation and cleaned the TV. I had to reorganize the dresser to set all the remote controls in order. I fixed the blanket on the bed and lined up each game perfectly.
"You're overdoing it. It's too perfect babe," Jessie told me. "Come on, it's time to go."
When we went back downstairs I was prepared to put all of the groceries I had just bought away and make up the sofa bed for Lacey but the bags weren't there anymore.
"I've put them away and made the bed," she smiled. She stood on her tip toes and kissed my lips. I reciprocated but quickly pulled away reminding her we needed to go. I noticed the small sigh that escaped her lips.
We arrived at the airport a little late. Jessie grabbed my hand interlocking our fingers. Her grip tight. But my grip on her hand let go when I seen them standing outside the main entrance, suitcases in hand. I ran straight to Cammy and pulled him into my tight embrace muttering in his ear asking if he was okay. He just nodded. He was wearing a large hoody and sweats. I felt my eyes tear up and I couldn't hold them back, I didn't really try if I'm honest with you. I knew I had to pull myself together, for everyone. I took a shaky breath, wiped my eye, pulled away and pat Cameron on the shoulder before greeting the rest of my family.
It was nice having mum and dad here. There was a rather funny dispute about who would drive home. Dad evened up being the driver, mum said she wanted to catch up with me. We got back home rather quickly and we decided to order Domino's for lunch as Jessie would be cooking later. I loved her cooking. We decided to watch Monsters University. Lexi loved it, he little face just light up when Sully came on screen. I sniggered earning a very cold glare from her.
"Toddlers," I huffed. Jessie chuckled, I smirked at that.
"What do you find so funny Cornish?" I whispered in her ear.
"Oh, just you."
Dad ordered the food and we all stuffed our faces. Especially Lacey. Greedy ass ate half of a pizza herself. It seemed like we only ate lunch before Jessie was making more food. She wanted to make Italian spiced chicken and garlic potato cubes. It was lovely and dad seemed to enjoy it.
"Gosh, Jessie how did you learn to cook like that? Jamie Oliver?" He asked.
"No, Gordon Ramsey," she smiled. Mum cracked up at that.
It was 8 o'clock now. How it got so late I'll never know. Lexi came and snuggled up on my knee.
"Rowan, I love you," she told me.
"I love you too," I smiled stroking her head.
"I love Jessie too. Not as much as you love her though," Lexi chattered.
"Hm, that's good."
Jessie was playing checkers with Lacey. The soaps were on and mum was engrossed. Dad was more interested in his book and Cam was half falling asleep on the chair. Jessie's phone started ringing and woke him though. Jessie excused herself to take the call.
"Guys, I'm going to bed," Cameron announced. I wanted to talk to him.
"Here, I'll help you," I jumped.
"Rowan I'm not crippled," he sighed. By now we were climbing the stairs.
"I want to talk to you... About your chemo."
"I don't want it. It's going to make me worse and weak," he moaned.
"It will help thought."
"I'm dying anyways."
"Cam you could live longer."
"Rowan, I'm not doing it, end of," he said firmly. "Please respect my decision and help me make the most I have left, please. I'm sorry this is happening."
I showed him the PlayStation and told him if he needed anything to get me before returning down stairs. I had to compose myself in the hall but when I entered the living room the atmosphere was tense.
"What happened?" I asked. Everyone looked at me sympathetically and Jess looked worried.
"I have to do a Europe tour," Jess looked down.
