"Ruby, do you maybe want to go on a road trip?" Sapphire asked shyly.
"I'd love to, but how long would it be?" The taller girl asked."Don't forget that I still have to work in the summer. Where would we even go?"
"Anywhere we want to."
"Such as?"
"Around the coast, meeting new people and seeing new faces. I don't know, Ru. Just anywhere but here. I want to get away for a little while, forget about the troubles in this tiny place and just go."
Ruby sighed, walking over to Sapphire who was on the couch, meanwhile she was in the kitchen. She changed the subject.
"You know, I'm seeing less and less food in here again."
"That's because I've been eating, Ruby."
"I know. It's good. I'm proud of you, babe."
She sat next to the shorter girl, wrapping her arm around her shoulder and grabbing her own phone off of the coffee table. She opened it and clicked quickly on some buttons on the screen. She was sending a message, and a rather long one. Sapphire noticed.
"Why the long text?" Sapphire asked.
"Just telling my mom we might be gone for a week or two." She smiled and looked at Sapphire. "So, where are we going?"
Sapphire's face lit up.

The next day they packed their things and got into Sapphire's car (Ruby's truck lacked air conditioning). Their first stop was a beach near the Empire City area. They swam in the ocean, splashing water at one another and building mini sandcastles. Their entire day was spent at the beach, just them two. They watched the sun set, going from a brilliant red to a softer yellow and finally fading away into nothingness, leaving Ruby and Sapphire in the purple-pink light of the sky.
"We could have done this at home, Sapphy." Ruby whispered, the delicate breeze blowing her words away.
"I know, but it just feels better when you're somewhere new." The shorter responded. It was midnight by the time they left the beach, renting a motel and making sure their room didn't have bedbugs or any other parasites. Once the room passed the test, they got into the shower and washed off the grainy sand and the salty seawater. They dried off and laid in bed, staring at each other and wondering,

'What did I ever do to deserve you?'

They fell asleep, holding each other, not caring whether they were here or in Beach City. The day was too perfect for them to care. All they cared about was each other.
