As another month in the Glade passes with plenty of weeks to spare, Nova kept getting letters sent from the Box, each and every one of those following weeks. She continued to not know what they meant, but at this point, she didn't care. Because what they said, was complete and utter nonsense. A little piece of paper, with all of its bumps and glory, that made no amount of sense, what so ever.
But yet... She kept reading them... And she didn't know why, she just did. Like a tiny little voice in her head told her to. Was it a mouse? Was it a person? Was it her mother? She might never know, but all she does is listen. That's all she can do.
The letter that week had read; "These letters are important, pay close attention." Nova took in a deep sigh straight from her lungs, as she sat in a wooden chair in front of a big bin full of other previous letters, thinking, wondering.
Important? She thought. How?
She grabbed another letter from other weeks, and read them over and over again. Trying to figure it out. Reading them, one by one, trying to understand what they had meant. Some words were even underlined, but of course, Nova couldn't see them, she could only read them. She needed help, but she didn't know that, yet.
"There's something special near, keep looking."
"You have no clue how much you mean to me, a daughter to a loving mother."
"Code is a tricky word."
"Its in a place, a place so simple, find it."
Nova groaned loudly, as she laid her head on the make-shift table. Letters everywhere, on the table, on the ground, in the bin, in her lap. She didn't have a clue what she was doing anymore, she was about to call a quit's. She needed more letters.
That is, until, someone entered the Homestead with her. "Are you constipated mate?" By the accent, she knew it was Newt.
She sighed, "No, I'm not, I'm just-" She paused. "-frustrated. Like, a lot. I don't know anymore."
"What about?" Newt asked.
"Just these letters," She said. Shaking her head, she added, "you wouldn't understand."
"Oh," Newt perked up. "I think I do understand."
"What do you mean?" Nova was confused.
"I've seen those letters."
"You mean, without asking first?" Nova questioned.
"No-" Newt choked out. "-B-but, I took a look at them. And I've seen lines under certain bumps." He kept going. "Almost like they mean something."
Nova's head shot up from the table, so fast that, one of the letters had been glued to her forehead. Snapping her head towards Newt, her broken eyes stared at him, right in the soul. "What?" She was intrigued now.
Newt tried to stifle a chuckle, covering his mouth to help him. "What?" Nova repeated, this time in curiosity.
Newt had went to her, and took the letter off of Nova's forehead. Right as he had laid it back onto the table, he couldn't contain himself much longer. And soon, he burst out laughing.
"What's so funny?" Nova asked, not knowing what happened. Which was the downside of being blind.
"Nothing," Newt shook his head.
Nova took it as a lost cause, and tried to gather all of her letters. "Mind showing me what you mean? Since you so suddenly understand." She crossed her arms, and leaned back in the chair.
"Do I have permission to touch your letters?" He asked, Nova nodded.
Grabbing the few letters that was underlined, he knew he couldn't read braille, he needed Nova's help, just as much as she needed his.
"Give me your hand."
Nova was very confused, furrowing her eyebrow's. But she did as she was told, and lent Newt her right hand.
Instead of taking her whole hand, he took her index finger, and rubbed it against the few bumps that was underlined.
"What does that say?" Newt had asked.
"There's." Nova spoke. "Why?"
"Alright," He continued. "That means, that word, is underlined."
Nova relaxed her eyebrow's, as she started to slightly get it now. "There's more."
Newt put all of the letters back into the bin, and brought out all of the ones with underlines, putting them all on the table.
"One by one I'll have your finger glide across each underlined bump, and you'll tell me what it say's." Newt explained. "Alright?" Nova nodded.
And so, he did.
"There's, a," Nova continued. "code, in."
"Okay, now say it all at once." Newt was on to something, and he knew it.
"There's a code in..." Nova spoke. "In what?"
Newt shrugged, "I don't know, we need more of those letter's from those shuck creator's." Scratching his face, he was deep in thought.
"Um," Nova whispered.
"Huh?" Newt sighed.
He looked down to see that he was still holding her hand, "Oh! I-I'm sorry!" He stuttered.
He took his hand away, and Nova silently blushed. Newt started to blush as well, but he tried to hide it, almost forgetting that she could not see, so it didn't even matter.
"I-I-" Newt cleared his throat, stopping himself from being so nervous. "Bloody-hell," He didn't know how to compose, he felt strange. He added, "I'm going to go tend to the gardens, if you need anything, don't be afraid to ask, ya shank? Um... Y-Yeah..." He didn't know how to put his words at the moment, he was scatter-brained. He exited the Homestead, not wanting to embarrass himself any further.
Gathering up the little important letters into a small stack, she placed them in a special place for later. She couldn't see whether she was blushing or not, but she could feel that her cheeks were as red as one of Newt's tomato's.
Just like Newt, she had mixed feelings as well.
