Chapter Two

One year ago

A few minutes before eleven o’ clock, I heard the doorbell rang. Knowing my parents told everyone in the house to sleep around ten, I went looked over the stairs, checking if the two live-in maids were up and they weren’t. I went down and looked over the peephole saw him standing in front of my door. Nathaniel Asher James, or Nash as everyone called him, was there. I immediately started jumping up and down and told myself to keep calm. I couldn’t believe that I, Sadie Bridget Miles Parker, just talked to Nash.

I opened the door without realizing I was wearing my robe and my eye mask as a headband. He was wearing jeans and hoodie.

“Oh, is this a bad time?” He asked.

“No, uh, I was kind of still up.” I said.

“Can you come out? Let’s hang out by the park. Jenny’s asleep and I’m kind of bored.” He said. “It’s okay if you don’t want to.”

“Uh, can I change?” I asked shyly.

He chuckled. “Of course, you can.”

I raised my index finger. “Wait here.”

I dashed to my room, leaving him on the front door, and quickly changed into shorts and shirt. I grabbed my phone and put it in my pocket. I checked my parents’ room, just to see if they were asleep. Of course, they were. They were heavy sleepers. They had five alarm clocks around them so that they could wake up early in the morning.

We walked to the park, which was a few blocks away, and sat by the swings. I looked at the sky and it was full of stars.

“This is kind of our first date.” He said awkwardly.

“Nice way of asking me out.” I laughed and playfully punched his arm. I slowly pushed myself and realized he has a girlfriend, Rain Henderson.

So this isn’t a date. We’re just hanging out. Geez, that’s great.

We fell into silence and I was still pushing myself while looking at the stars above.

“You’re finally in high school!” He said, breaking the silence.

I nodded.

“That’s cool.” He said.

I smiled coyly. I didn’t know what to say to him. I mean, yeah, sure we smile at each other and said hi or hello, but no big conversation. This was the longest conversation we had since the beginning of my time being.

I checked my phone and the time flashed 11:11.

“Eleven-eleven,” I said. “Make a wish!”

I wish Nash is boyfriend. I wish that someday, we’ll be together forever. He’s the only one that I want and I know I’m young to wish for forever but I really want him.

Suddenly, the bushed moved, making me open my eyes.

That’s odd. I thought. It was a hot night, no wind or anything.

“What did you wish for?” Nash asked, noticing I was staring at the bushes.

“It won’t come true if I tell you.” I grinned.

He smiled and started asking me questions. After a while, we were both silent again.

A few moments later, he sighed. “Sadie.”

“Yeah?”

“Will you go out with me?” He asked.

“YES!” I said quickly, and then realized what he just asked. “You have a girlfriend, but you’re asking me out.”

“Things are complicated between us, and don’t mind her okay?” He stood up and smiled. “Since you’ll be entering the high school building, I’ll give you a tour tomorrow.”

He left before I could answer.

I walked home alone, not really scared of my surroundings. I was on cloud nine. Nash just talked to me and asked me out. My wish came true – or so I thought.

The next day, I was excited. We were finally going to hang out in public. I entered the high school building and immediately saw him. He was surrounded by his friends and as I walked near him, one of his friends pointed at me and he turned around.

“When will the tour start?” I asked.

His friends started laughing; he looked down, concealing his laughter. Soon enough, Rain entered the scene and pushed me aside.

“There are no tours, honey. It was a prank.” She said and gave Nash a passionate kiss.

I told myself not to cry in public so I turned around and ran towards the exit. It was a stupid prank if you thought about it. I walked home, ignoring my calls from my friends, and told my mom that I called in sick. I cried throughout the day and fell asleep in the process of doing so. By afternoon came, the girls arrived at my house. They brought over my books and schedule and the list I needed to bring the next day.

“I’m sorry.” Jennifer Anne James said. “You know, for having a stupid big brother.”

“It’s okay, Jen.” I lied. I wasn’t okay at all. It was the most horrifying first day of school ever and my most humiliating experience in my whole entire life.

They comforted me and stayed until dinner. We talked about everything I missed – the teachers we were having, the couples who made it through summer, the people who asked where I was, and the rest. We were all lucky to have the same schedule, or else I would have asked anyone on what I missed. I was lucky to have these girls.

The following day, I told myself that the minute I enter the building, I wouldn’t let anyone bring me down. I walked in with a huge smile plastered on my face. People waved hello to me, I waved back. A bunch of tenth grade students probably noticed I arrived because I heard them yelling my name and Nash.

I walked towards my locker and a few seconds later, my friends surrounded me. I was putting my books inside my locker and Jenny whispered that her brother was walking towards our way. I slammed my locker door real hard and the girls and I walked away.

A few steps forward, he screamed out two words I was waiting for him to say.

“I’M SORRY.” He said.

I stopped walking and noticed that the hallway was turned shut, like it was on mute. Even Rain’s mouth was closed. I was thinking of turning around and raising my middle finger, but everyone knew I wasn’t that girl. Instead of doing anything, I just sashayed away.

Not long enough, Nash apologized to me personally. I forgave him, seeing how he was really sorry. He asked me again if we could hang out as friends and I told him everyone deserved a second chance. From that day forward, we hung out. He helped me study biology while I helped him with Algebra – we were in the same topic. When Rain broke up with him for unknown reasons, I was there beside him, making sure he was alright. He cried on my shoulder because he really did like (but not love) her. I told him that he would soon find a girl who was worth his tears.

“You’re simply amazing,” he said. “I’m glad we became best friends.”

“I’m glad we became best friends too.” I said and he impulsively kissed me.

Knowing what he was going through, I shrugged off the kiss and not give a meaning about it. Truth to be told… it was my first kiss. I just hugged him in return.

He looked at me and smiled. “Sometimes all you need is a kiss and a hug from the girl who has always been there.”
