Chapter Five
Friday came and Mon was not being herself. We couldn’t figure out what was wrong so we let her be. We didn’t want her to feel pressured about telling us whatever she was keeping inside.
Gym was the only class we didn’t have together. Not technically since Jenny and I chose tennis while the rest chose soccer
“Did you hear?” Jenny asked.
“About what?” I sat down on the bench in front of my locker while I fix my shoelace.
“Nash’s date,” She said.
“Who?!”
“I don’t know who she is but she’s in our year.” She said as tied up her hair.
Nash likes someone from our grade... Say what now?
“Sadly, it’s not you. Thomas asked you already.” She stated the obvious.
“I know that,” I said and stood up. “But who is the lucky bitch?”
“Don’t worry, Sadie. You’ll find out soon enough. I’ll ask him over and over until he gets irritated and blurts out the name of his date.” She laughed.
We high-fived and our instructor called us all to start warming up. After ten minutes, Jenny and I walked towards the private court for varsity players. Being a varsity player has a pro and a con: having your own court during gym and doubling up your practice
I waited for Jenny to settle and I thought about the mystery girl. Was she beautiful? Was she nice? Was she aware that Nash was mine? (Well, emotionally not physically.)
All the sudden, a tennis ball hit my face.
“That’s what you get when you don’t concentrate.” Jenny laughed from the other side of the court.
“I hate you!” I yelled back as I rubbed my forehead.
“Concentrate, Parker! You have a game next week!” Coach Fields shouted from the fence. Sometimes she drops by to check on me – if I was really practicing or not. This was my second year as a tennis player and I haven’t shown any goofiness around. I wanted everyone on the team to see me that I was serious about it.
“Yes, Coach!” I said. I shook my thoughts away and got my head in the game.
After Gym was free period and instead of wasting time, we did our homework in the Student’s Lounge. I started working on advance school work since I was going to be out of school for around two weeks, thanks to tennis. Jenny was helping me and the girls did it as well when they arrived.
School ended and Thomas waited for me by the parking lot. We decided it was best to talk at The Loft, a restaurant near my house, and talked about the costumes.
“How about Barbie and Ken?” Thomas asked.
“That’s my birthday party theme.” I said.
“When’s your birthday?” He asked.
“Next, next Saturday, and invitations will be sent on Monday.” I smiled.
He smiled and proceeded to suggest some ideas. “What about Mickey and Minnie Mouse?”
“Not really unique,” I said. “We’d just wear red bottoms and white tops plus have two huge mouse ears on the top of our heads.”
“Right, well, what about Belle and Beast?” He asked.
