Chapter Sixteen
Nadine: Hey, Sadie. Can you come over tonight?
Sadie: Yeah, sure. Just us?
Nadine: Yep!
Sadie: Alright! Be there in 10!
Whenever Nadine would ask me to come over, it only meant one thing: she and Mark had a fight. Being raised by a single mom who has a busy schedule and has no siblings or any close relatives, she only finds happiness through us, her friends, and her boyfriend, Mark.
I changed into my pajamas and grabbed my toothbrush, iPhone, and charger. It was a school night so I told dad I was sleeping at Nadine's house. Mom was still in the restaurant, helping the others clean up since someone celebrated his or her birthday.
“You'll be coming home in what time?” Dad asked.
“Five in the morning,” I answered.
“Alright, just ask Penny to walk you and tell her what time to pick you up for tomorrow.” He said and gave me a kiss on the forehead.
I nodded and called Penny to walk me.
Nadine's house was big for three people: Nadine, her mom - Stella, and their maid – Grace. Grace has been there since Stella was born. Nadine was mostly alone since her mom is always working. Stella was an actress and a director and was rarely home. She and Nadine would only bond during Sundays or whenever Nadine visits her on set. Nadine's dad, Noel, who was a Broadway actor, left them when Nadine was born. She didn't talk to him unless he would greet her on her birthday or any holidays.
Mark Bass' an actor and he went to our school, but instead of going to class, he uses the home school program. Mark only goes to school every Tuesday and Wednesday and that was the only time he and Nadine could hang out. Nadine met Mark Bass during her visits to her mom's set. He was guest starring in her mom's soap opera and they took off. Even though they had been fighting a lot, they never reached the point that they should break up.
I have all the keys to the Crew's house – we gave each other spare keys so that we wouldn't have to knock whenever we have to go to someone's house.
I haven't even inserted the key when Grace opened the door.
“Howja know I was coming?” I asked as I walked in.
“Nadine ordered pizza and asked me to bake some brownies and asked me to make two bowls of mashed potatoes.” She answered.
I smirked. Those were the “Nadine-Sadie” food. Whenever she goes to my house or vice versa, we always eat two boxes of pizza, a pan of brownies, finish one bowl of mashed potatoes – separately, and drink Four Lokos.
I quickly went to Nadine's room and the first thing I saw was a bunch of red roses. I assumed that they were from Mark. The second thing I saw was Nadine with bunch of tissues all over our fort. She was sniffing and rubbing the fur of her cat, Belle.
If we ever had these Nadine-Sadie moments, we would set up this fort and we would stay there all night until the sun goes up.
“Bad night?” I asked.
“We broke up.” Her voice cracked.
I immediately went to her and hugged her tight. “Nad, what happen?”
“He let his popularity get in his way. His manager told him that if he continued to date me, his popularity would go down. His exacts words were, 'I had this before I met you. I don't need you in my life now. I've realized these past few weeks that being an actor means anything in the world to me. So I'm letting you go.'” She sobbed. “I was speechless. And guess what?”
