The Shoreline Dog

Walking along the shoreline,

letting the waves bite at my ankles,

the moon shining above and below,

noticing the man in the moon looks sad today.

All of the sea creatures sleeping peacefully along the beach,

then I see a dog, sitting in the sand

staring at something.

I approach the dog and see what she watches.

I do not believe my eyes; the dog is guarding a baby of about 2 years of age.

The baby sleeping with not a care in the world.

The dog's brown eyes watch my every move,

I sit down letting the dog approach me.

I start to wonder why someone would abandon a child,

but I wonder even more about the presence of the dog.

Does the dog think the baby is her own? Where did the dog come from?

A few minutes later, I pick up the baby and turn around,

the dog is nowhere to be found.

Who or what was the dog I will never know,

and to think I was going on a walk down at the shore.
