Chapter 5
I change into a formal outfit before I head out to work. My mom hasn't talked to me since the incident this morning.
Her reaction wasn't normal, she has to be tied into this some way, or another.
To say the least, I was beyond nervous. I kind of regret going back and looking at the history of this place. But I'm also frightened at the fact, that I'm not as scared as I should be.
Night guards are going missing every where and I just got hired as a new one? Am I out of my mind?
I go downstairs and put on my maroon converse. I look for my mom to say goodbye, but she's lying on the couch asleep. I turn to see the tv had been on. It was replaying old clips of my father and her.
She's drowning herself in misery. I feel like we're back to square one again. I run upstairs and grab the pack of smokes from my drawer, I noticed one pack had gone missing.
I go to see mom again and I realized she had the pack on the ground, beside an ashtray with multiple burnt out cigarette butts.
I sighed and kissed her head. I decided against leaving a note, I'm sure she'll remember.
I open the door and step outside into the cool breeze. I make my way over to the pizzeria. When I first get there, I noticed they're already closed. I knocked on the window, waiting for someone to open the door.
A middle aged man opened the door for me. I'm assuming he's the manager.
I shook his hand. "I'm the manager, please call me Adam."
I nodded my head. I looked around the place and it looked fairly new.
"Is this one of the more recent openings."
He nodded his head. "It hasn't been open very long, a year and a bit." He continues "I'm really glad you're here. This job is pretty easy and straight forward. It's just hard to find someone who knows mechanics. So that's why when you came along, I was very grateful."
He gestured me to follow him. We took a seat in his office.
"First, I'd like to say, you're replacing a girl who recently quit. I was the one who had to take over until we found someone new."
I'm not quite sure why he's telling me this, is he trying to keep me from making assumptions?
I nodded my head, continuing to listen to him. "Okay, so your schedule. You'll be here every second day, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The other days are for the second night guard."
"There's another one?"
He nods his head "we needed two, it works a lot better. Your shifts are 10 hours long. With this job, you won't be doing the same thing every night." He continues "say one day an animatronic isn't working properly, I'll need you to fix them up, some days you'll just be sitting around, sometimes we get special orders delivered. Speaking of that, next Saturday, we are getting a new animatronic."
That peaked my interest. "Really?"
"Yes, we have hired someone and he specially designed it for us, it's an animatronic the kids will love."
"When's the last time you've gotten an animatronic?" I question
"The recent one we've gotten is a special one, but we don't tend to use him. He malfunctioned the day we got him."
"That's unfortunate." I shook my head.
"Yeah we just keep him in the back room. Anyway I'm going to need you to unpack the animatronic and set him up for the next day, the grand reveal." He says with exaggerated hand motions.
