When I got out of the car, I didn't really know what I was seeing.

The sign over the huge gate said State Fair.

I had seen signs for this place years past, but I never went. I mean, my parents were too busy with their fucked up relationship and crappy jobs to care. Plus we probably couldn't afford it anyways.

I stood there with my mouth open, not attractively at that. I stood like that for a few minutes before Alex walked up beside me and waved his hand in my face, trying to get my attention.

"Hello in there? Nova are you there?" He said in a teasing tone with a smile on his face.

I finally came back from the dark side to reply with "I've never been to a fair before."

He shot me a 'wtf' look.

"You've gotta be kidding me right? I've been coming here ever since I was a kid with my family."

"At least you've got a family." I said and the devil inside me was snickering as a tear fell down my cheek.

He quickly noticed and caught it with his thumb and wiped it off my cheek gently.

"Hey. I didn't mean to get you upset. Are you okay?" He said in a sympathetic tone.

"Yeah." I said readjusting myself, a smile crept across his face when he saw me try to.

"C'mon." He said putting his arm around my shoulders pulling me to the front gate. "You're gonna have then time of your life today."

When we got to the admission booth I realized that I was honestly broke.

"I don't have any money." He looked at me and smiled.

"It's okay Nova, I'll pay. I'm gonna put fifteen years of memories into your head today." he said with a smile as he reached back for his wallet in his back pocket, his arm still around my shoulder.

I'd never had someone do that before. Pay for you that is. I had seen it on TV before and in movies. It could mean as a friend. Or something more. I don't know though. I mean, why exactly would he like me?

When the man took the money and gave us both an armband and put it on our wrists we walked in the gate.

I looked around the park and saw everything. The Ferris Wheel, the games, the food and all the rides. I smiled in wonder at the sight, but then a five-year old me popped into my head.

I remember they had posters about the state fair all around the school. Back then, I was a cheery blonde haired little girl with a vast imagination.

"Daddy, daddy!" I said as I came home and ran over to my dad sitting on the couch watching ESPN.

"What sugarplum?" He used to call me that. He was much nicer to me when I was younger. I guess as I grew my parents became angrier and angrier at one another for ruining eachothers lives.

I put the poster for the fair in my father's lap. When he picked it up his expression faded. When I was little, we lived in a crappy apartment complex on the other side of town, a couple years before my mother had gotten a lucky draw at poker in Vegas and bought the house we live in now.
