I’m not really sure what exactly happened or how long I was blacked out. When my eyes opened all I knew was that I was now laid in a hospital bed. I looked around the room before my gaze fell upon Jess who was seated right next to the bed. I could hear her humming quietly to herself as held onto my hand. She was obviously lost in her own little world since she had yet to notice I was staring at her. I cleared my throat slightly which immediately caused Jess’s eyes to dart down to where I was laying.
“You’re finally awake,” she smiled as she leaned down to kiss me softly.
“Yeah, I am… What exactly happened?” I questioned.
“Do you not remember anything?” Jess frowned worriedly. I stayed silent for a few moments and thought back. I remembered what happened with Tamra of course but the details were a bit fuzzy now that I thought about it. To be honest, what was most on my mind was the fact that my entire body was aching. That was a little more than annoying.
“I remember Tamra doing something to me… She was hurting me…and there was a crash…and,” I trailed off as I tried to think back but nothing came to me. “I don’t remember anything else.”
Jess sighed and I saw nothing but worry in her expression. She continued running her thumb across my knuckles gently as she spoke, filling me in on what happened.
“Ally had called me right away when you left to go into Tamra’s office. She said she never got your text but she heard you yell out and she was worried. The door was locked so she couldn’t do anything to help right that second. So I rushed over with a few security guys and they broke down the door, and well…” she trailed off from her story and I blinked slightly in confusion.
“And?”
“The first thing I saw when I got in there was her strangling you. You were unconscious already and I was so scared I just…”
“You don’t have to tell me any more,” I said quietly. I could hear in her voice that she was starting to get a bit choked up and really, all that other stuff wasn’t important right now.
“You know what the best part is though? I think she’s in jail now,” Jess smirked. She moved her other hand up so that she could hold my hand in both of hers but that’s when I noticed something odd. I looked down to see Jess’s hand in a hard brace that extended halfway up her forearm.
“What the hell happened to your hand?” I said suddenly. If Tamra hurt her I swear to god….
“I um,” Jess looked down at her hand guiltily before shifting her gaze back up to me. “I may have hit Tamra.”
“Hit her?” I said incredulously. I never would have expected that out of Jess in a million years.
“Okay, I may have punched her,” she corrected herself. “Several times. Really hard.”
I felt my jaw drop slightly and I was shocked into silence for a moment. That was literally the last thing I ever expected to hear from Jess. I couldn’t help but laugh slightly in spite of myself, though I was upset that Jess had gotten hurt in the process.
“Is your hand okay though? It’s not broken or anything is it?” I asked, running my fingers gently over her exposed fingers.
“No, it’s fine. There’s just a lot of swelling and it’s kinda bruised,” she answered. “I would do it again though. Bitch had it coming.”
I laughed loudly at that comment. It was just so unlike Jess and it genuinely surprised me. Just as I was about to say more, a doctor walked in.
“Ahh, good you’re awake,” he said, smiling kindly at me. “Everything came back fine. You just passed out from a lack of airflow and all you’ve got are a few bruises. I can go ahead and release you now.”
