Chapter One - The Search
Cale’s POV
“Cale they’re here! The packets are here!” My mother basically screamed as she barged into my room with her arms overflowing with stacks of large yellow envelopes; she walked over to my bed where I was lounging and dropped the stack at my feet before climbing on the bed next to me and grabbing the envelope that ended up on the top of the stack.
“What are you doing?” I asked taking out my ear-buds and raising my eyebrows at her.
“Helping you narrow down your search.” She replied with a huge smile as she worked to open the first envelope and pour out the contents on the bed.
“I’m sure I can handle this on my own.” Did she really think I wanted her to sit here and go over girls profiles with me? Wasn’t I supposed to be the one in charge of finding my mate?
“And I’m sure that if I leave you here alone with this stack it will still be in the same place I left it a week from now.” She raised her eyebrows at me and gave me one of those ‘tell me I’m wrong’ looks.
“No, I’m sure they would be on the floor a week from now. How am I supposed to sleep with this mess on my bed?” I joked back giving her a wide grin.
“Exactly my point! Let’s start with this one from Illinois; your great grandfather found his mate in Illinois, maybe you will too!” She said cheerfully as she started to finger through the stack of papers.
Knowing that it wouldn’t do me any good to argue with her plus the fact that she was right, if she didn’t help I would probably push off the task until the last minute, I started looking through the papers with her. For each woman there was a headshot picture and a brief profile about them; it would take me forever to go through and read each profile so I decide to start narrowing down the search based on looks first, then move onto the profiles and see if I could eliminate any more from there. Maybe it was a little superficial to pick the girls by looks first but let’s be honest, the first thing that attracts you to someone is their looks; if you’re not happy with the way someone looks could you really ever be happy with them as a whole?
The Illinois folder contained over one hundred profiles but much to my mother’s displeasure only a little over twenty were up to my standards by picture only; I set those to the side while my mother picked up the next envelope so we could go through those too. By the time we got to the tenth envelope my mom got the general idea of what I was looking for in a girl and was doing her fair share of throwing out the ones that she didn’t think were up to par; I did make sure to sneak a glance at them before she threw them out just to make sure I wasn’t missing out on anyone I might be interested in. It took us the entire day to go through all the pictures and when we finally finished I still had over a thousand profiles that I would need to look over and narrow down; the council liked to have one hundred or less girls that they would have to go interview so I still had my work cut out for me in narrowing down the search.
