Veronica's p.o.v.

I woke up in a white bed with blankets tucked around me. Sunlight was pouring in through the french doors across the room. The doors opened to a balcony with vintage patio furniture and an amazing ocean view; something I had only seen a few times.

"Senorita Veronica?" a woman's voice, with a thick accent, rang out as the wind blew the curtains up almost to my head.

"Maria," I said as I ran over to her, knocking the basket that she sat down in front of her.

Laughing, Maria hugged me back. "I'm very happy to see you too Veronica." Maria had a thick accent because she lived in the Puerto Rico before she came to work here. As a child, back when things were less complicated in the family, I was always with Maria.

Seven years ago

"We can't do this anymore! You aren't a good influence for our children!" My mom shouted at my uncle. "Just because you married my sister and have all this money doesn't mean we have to bow down to you every summer!"

I climbed out of bed and away from Maria who was sleeping in a chair across the room by the beautiful french doors. I tiptoed my way toward the bedroom door that was open a crack and peered out, trying to catch a glimpse of my parents and my uncle.

"While I may not be blood related to your children, I'm still part of this family and therefore I would like to see my niece and nephews in the summer." My uncle's back came into view and he was still in his suit and shiny shoes. He must've just come back from the awards show.

My dad wrapped his arms around my mom and calmly said, "Enjoy these last few days because after this summer ends we are not coming back." They then turned around and went back to their room on the other side of house. I ran back over to the bed as soon as they left and buried my head beneath the mountain of soft blankets and pillows. The light from the door flooded the room as my uncle opened it and came in. His shoes tap, tap, tapped all the way to the carpet that was under the bed. He stood there for a second as I kept my eyes closed and pretended to snore like I had heard adults do. He chuckled lightly and then kissed my head. He left and hesitated at the door before whispering I love you and leaving.

"I brought you some clothes to change into Veronica but you knocked them over." Maria laughed as she looked down at the basket with clothing laying around it.

I laughed and bent down to pick them up. "It's ok Maria," I said as I semi-folded the clothing and piled it back into the woven basket.

The familiar tap of my uncle's shoes entered the room. He always had those black shoes on. I stood up and he gave me a huge bear hug. "Veronica! It's so good to see you!" My feet weren't touching the ground.

"I can't breath, uncle."

"Oh my, I'm sorry," he said as he put me back on the ground and chuckled. "I forgot that I used to give you kids tight hugs."

I smiled and sighed slightly, "Back when we were little and we would always come here for the summer."

"Yes back then." He got a far away look in his eye, for a moment, when he said this but it disappeared as fast as it had showed up. "But anyways, what brings you here?"

I debated whether or not I should tell him the truth. He's too busy with everything in Hollywood, maybe even one of his many girlfriends. I walked over to the doors and sighed. "I needed a place to stay for the night and I had no one else to go too. No offence, things just got out of hand with some old and new friends."
