Part 28: Keep Your Enemies Closer

Veronica's p.o.v.

Lola and Grayson came back around midnight; Mary and her friends came with.

"Hey Lola? Can I talk to you for a minute?" I asked Lola as I walked into my bedroom before she could respond.

I heard her mumble something to gray and Ethan before coming in the room and closing the door. "What's wrong?"

"What's wrong?!" I said freaking out, "You brought Mary and her goons back to our apartment!"

"Chill out Veronica! They'll hear you!" She whisper shouted at me. "None of them will find out."

"That's not what I'm worried about," I said as I sat down and put my head in my hands. 

Lol sat down next to me. "What are you worried about then?"

"I kissed Ethan," I confessed without looking up. "I'm scared Mary is going to see that I like him. You know how she was back home."

"Look she isn't going to do anything with me here. Also if he really likes you then he's not going to fall for her charms. He'll see that she's manipulative and fake," she said trying to cheer me up, "You keep it real all day, every day and if he doesn't like that then he isn't worth worrying about."

"Ok. You're right but I'm also scared that she'll find out about Rose. I can't have her find out; it'll ruin everything." I looked up at Lola scared to death. "And with the Teen Choice Award coming up tomorrow....."

"They won't find out. I promise," Lola said as she stood up and pulled me up with her. "For now just go sit with Ethan and have a good time."

"I don't know...." I trailed off as someone knocked on the door.

"Come in," Lola said because I wasn't able to speak at the moment.

Ethan opened the door and asked, "Is everything all right? Mary and her friends were wondering."

"Everything is alright,..." Lola started.

"I'm just going to hang out in here for a few before I go to bed. I'm not feeling very well," I finished.

"Do you want some company?" Ethan asked, his eyes lighting up with hope.

"I think she'll be o-....." Lola started to say; I interrupted her.

"That would be nice, having some company. It will probably be boring but-....." I said and Ethan cut me off.

"I'd gladly keep you company," he said, his expression utterly happy.

He stepped into the room and Lola went to leave, not before giving me a sideways glance. "Ok then. Goodnight Veronica. Ethan, if you want to spend the night, we have a guest room across the hall. I'll put a pillow or two and some blankets in there."

"Ok thank you Lola. Goodnight," he turned to tell her. Lola closed the door and went back to Grayson, Mary, Jackie and Aly.

"I'm not going to be very good company," I told Ethan as I dug through my dresser drawer looking for sweatpants.

"It's ok. I'd rather hang out with you than be out there with that Mary chick," Ethan said as he plopped himself down on my bed and got comfortable. What he said made me pause. He doesn't like Mary?

"Well," I said as I turned to head to the bathroom, "I'm going to take a shower. You can find something on the tv if you like." I tossed the remote at him and close the bathroom door.

I turned the water on and filled the bathtub up with hot water. I let the steam relax my tense muscles as I sat down in the steamy water. I closed my eyes as I sunk farther down into the bubbles.
