Hunter
I turn the ignition off, my truck silencing. Mae walks around and smiles, making me feel even more excited.
"What are we doing here?" She wonders curiously.
We're at the park right now, the wind whistling through the tree branches, the chilly air getting us both to snuggle our coats closer together.
"Well, I have a surprise for you." I simply say then go ahead and clasp her hand in mine.
I guide her down the parks trail until we end up by a pond and then she spots the blanket and weave basket on the ground under a big moss tree.
She gasps, "wait! That's for us?!"
I laugh, "well yeah. Knowing you, you're not one to be stuffed up in this five star restaurant, so I wanted to make it better and more comfortable for you. Hopefully this is to your standards."
"Hunter, this is way more than I could've ever asked for." She smiles wide at me before dragging us toward the picnic I've set out.
We sit down and I get out paper plates and silverware. She continues to watch me with a pleasant grin on her pretty face.
"Alright, I got peanut butter and jelly ooor peanut butter and jelly. Your pick." I mischievously smile.
"You know, I'm in the mood for peanut butter and jelly. Got that?" She plays along.
"Nah, I think I ran out." I tease but she softly smacks my arm making me laugh.
I pull out a sandwich in a ziplock baggie and then get myself one too. Then I get some apples and strawberries along with her all time favorite - barbecue chips.
"Barbecue chips?!" Her eyes widen.
"Yeah, well besides popcorn, barbecue chips have qualified as your second favorite food." I proudly explain.
"Madison told you, didn't she?" Mae giggles.
I shamelessly smile, "yeah. I got her to tell me a few things."
"At least I know you're trying." She grins up to me.
"Yeah. Well, let's play Q and A while we eat. That's always fun."
She laughs, "okay then. You go first."
"Hmm, alright. If you could live anywhere, where would it be?" I ask.
"That's easy. I'd buy myself some land in the country and have a farm completed with a bazillion horses and farm animals. Maybe some cattle to round up and sell for good prices." She easily answers, surprising me.
"Wow, I half expected you to pick Paris or like Hawaii."
She half laughs again, "I'm not normal, so just be prepared for that."
I chuckle, "oh I believe it."
"Alright, you answer."
"Well it most likely be like you. Away from everything, a ranch sounds perfect or just a farm house in the country." I reply.
"Cool. Alright, let me ask something," it takes her awhile before she finally springs a light bulb, "what's a bad habit of yours?"
"Pfft," I scoff, "I do this thing with my hands. I fiddle with them and I can't keep them still. Usually it's when I'm nervous and I just stuff them in my pockets."
She giggles, "mines similar only I twist my birthstone ring. I mess with it around my finger when I get scared or bored."
We continue to talk and play the game, leading us into deep conversations and then thunder rumbles ahead.
Exactly what I was looking for.
