Hunter

Mae walks to my car with some sort of sadness washing over her body.

She jumps in the passenger seat of my truck, smiling, but I can tell she's forcing it.

"Mae, what happened?" I ask right away.

She shrugs, "what makes you think something's wrong."

"You twirl your ring around your finger when you're scared and stressed." I explain, pointing to her ring.

She hides it quickly, "I'm sorry, but just start driving and then I'll explain."

I shift the gear into drive, making my way around the collasack. She sighs, still not talking. It bothers me to see her like this, I wish I could do something about it.

"Just Carson messes." She simply states.

I roll my eyes, "that's not enough."

"He just texted me today." She shows me her phone screen when I stop at a red light.

"I know you've been through a lot with him, but to me it sounds like he's really sorry about how everything went down. I'd give him a chance Mae, it'll help you in the long run really." I say.

"But what if I do something wrong?!" She freaks out.

"Oh Mae," I chuckle, "even if you did, would he care?! I don't think so, the way you explain him to me it sounds like he'd always be there for you and he obviously never judges you. I don't think you should worry."

"Why are you helping me reconnect with a boy that I used to like?" She wonders.

"I want you happy Mae and Carson was something that made you happy. You've told me before, you always felt more like brother and sister than you ever did boyfriend and girlfriend, getting your "brother" back will help you."

She smiles at me, "how did I wind up with such an amazing guy?"

"How'd I wind up with a famous author and a pretty girl?" I fire back.

She and I laugh together.

"Well, I was going to take you to the water gardens in Fort Worth and hopefully a restaurant for dinner, but considering your state of emotion, how about pizza and a movie at my place?" I suggest.

"Yeah, that would be amazing." She nods her head in agreement and I turn my truck on a U turn to go back to my place.

Once we arrive she flops on the sofa as if she owns the place and let's Elbrus lick her face clean. I grin at her cuteness while she rubs down my dog.

I order pizza and she goes on Netflix to search for some movies for us to watch.
We settle for an action flick and before we know it, we're wrapped in a story about a boy who loves a girl that gets captured.

A knock on the door reminds us that we have pizza coming so I stand up to go pay for it.

After I pay and the delivery man leaves, Mae and I settle back on the couch and stuff our faces with delicious food.

"You know, I think just being here with you is perfect." Mae admits, snuggling up against me.

I'm going to marry this girl, I just know it.
