Hunter
I'm not going to lie when I say I'm just the slight bit jealous of Carson and Mae. I know for a fact Mae would never cheat on me, but it's still weird for them to be so close. Not to mention how mad I am at him for doing whatever he did to Mae the night of the wedding, he had her run off in tears.
I step up to her front door and knock, an aching feeling settling in the pit of my stomach.
The door opens to Kaitlyn and she smiles at me sweetly, "hey Carson. Mae's in her room I think."
I step inside, "thanks Kaitlyn."
I walk slowly to Mae's room, but stop when I hear crying and muffled voices.
"But he said it C! I - I don't know what to do anymore. Everything was perfect and then Carson came and just had to have the courage to come out and say he loves me again. I'm beyond happy with Hunter - but, but-"
"But he's not Carson." Christina fills in, her voice soft. I've never heard her this way.
"Yeah." Mae whispers under her breath.
My heart feels like it just fell into my sneakers. She still loves Carson.
Why isn't this surprising for me? I knew it all along. I just knew it and I still took a leap of faith and got myself wrapped up in this girl, knowing exactly she'll be swept away sooner or later.
If only it was later . . .
I came here to talk to Mae, make sure everything's okay. Obviously things have changed in the last twenty four hours.
Pushing the cracked door open, I let myself in. Hurt and worry flood Mae's red and puffy eyes when she sees me come in.
"You love him? Great." I simply state then charge out.
I'm down the hallways before I hear her tiny voice cry out to me.
"Hunter! Please! Wait, I can explain."
I roll my eyes, that's what they all say but yet they're all the same pathetic excuse.
Kaitlyn looks up from her phone where she sits on the couch, puzzled by our exit.
"Mae, calm down." Christina soothes, holding her back.
I take one look back at Mae, she's wearing fluffy pajama pants, they're super soft, and a tshirt that has the Texas Rangers logo on it. Her hair is in a high pony tail, make up no where near her face, but coated heavily in salty tears.
"Bye Mae." I mumble and then walk out.
I open my car door and just stare at the seat with pain filing my chest.
Mae loves Carson.
Carson loves Mae.
Of course. Of course the legendary couple were going to get back together. Of course childhood girlfriend and boyfriend were going to relive the past. Of course they love each other!
Soon enough a car rolls down the street, but I obviously don't notice it until something cool and painful collides with my side.
"Hunter!" A shrill scream breaks the silence in the air.
And that was the last thing I hear until my world is black.
