There are two doors in the square room. One is across me, on the other side of the wall to the right, and the next is directly across from it in the wall I'm leaning on. Each are made of metal, and have at least three visible locks on them. The boy left through the door next to me.
I've been laying on the ground for a long time. I'm not sure how long, since I don't have a clock, but at least a couple hours. I can't get up. The only thing I can do is stare at those stupid doors.
I have to get out of here. I don't know exactly where "here" is, but I'm guessing it's not safe. The crunchers are probably still looking for me. And I don't know if I can trust the boy, not yet anyway. I don't know if I can trust the voices, either.
When the door across from me opens, first I hear a whirring sound as the locks are being unlocked. Then it slides open, and in steps the boy. He's holding food. Not like normal food, he's holding uncooked ears of corn.
"Hey. I'm guessing you still can't move, since you're just sitting there."
I glare at him. Then I notice he's bleeding. "Are you okay?"
"Not really, but I'll be fine." He dumps the corn next to me and then slides down to the ground, grunting. His eyes look like they're struggling to stay open. He pulls some bandages out of his pocket, then rips off his sweater. "Hey, can you help me with this?"
I nod and start wrapping the bandage around his arm.
"Make it tighter, it has to have more pressure than that."
I start over and tighten it against his skin.
He nods at me as I finish, then rests his head against the wall. "I'm gonna sleep for a bit..."
I stare at him as he sinks into sleep, his sweaty blonde hair matted against the wall. I pick up a piece of corn. It's yellow and juicy, but I know it'll taste weird uncooked. Guess I don't have a choice... I unsheath it, then take a large bite.
It's delicious.
Maybe it's because I haven't eaten anything and I'm exhausted and starving, but it's the best tasting thing I've ever had in my life.
Woosh.
Click.
I look up to see the door opening next to me. A dark, dripping hand grips onto the edge of it, pushing it forwards.
And suddenly, I find myself face to face with a grinning cruncher. I scream and grab the boy, shaking him as hard as he can.
He wakes up quickly and stares at me, angry. "What?!"
I point to the cruncher.
"Oh." The boy sighs and throws it an ear of corn. "There. Just give it more every once in awhile, and shut up so I can sleep."
I stare at him in disbelief as he falls asleep again.
The cruncher shoves the corn into its mouth and crushes it with its black teeth. Its dripping black skin pools onto the floor. Then it swallows, looks at me with its hollow eye sockets, and turns to leave out the door. A pile of black slime is left behind.
Woosh.
Click.
And with that, it's gone.
