"Hey mom, could you hand me that wrench?"

She frowned at the tool box. "Which one's the wrench?"

"You don't know what a wrench is?"

She looked at me, confused, then shook her head.

I sighed. "It's that big one on the left."

She handed it to me, her small fingers tangling with mine. I gave the knut a couple of twists and then handed it back. I stepped back from the hood of the car and put my hands on my hips, admiring my handiwork. "I think it looks pretty good, huh?"

Mom looked at the car, then back at me. "I have no idea what you did."

I laughed and closed the hood. "Then it's probably a good thing you have me around."

I shoved all my tools back into the box, then hauled it to the other side of the garage. "I was promised pie?" I said, turning around and smirking.

Mom rolled her eyes, then waved me inside. "Yep."

We went in. I plopped myself down in one of the chairs for the kitchen table. A plate with a large slice of apple pie was set in front of me. My mom sat across from me with her own slice.

"So Kanna, how's living on your own?" She asked.

"It's good. Weird."

Mom nodded. She twirled her fork on the plate, not moving to take a bite. "You're probably the youngest in that building. 16 isn't very old."

I sighed and set down my fork. Great, we have to have this conversation again... "Yep. It's young."

"You can always move back if it gets too hard for you..."

"I'm fine, mom." I looked over the trash can. It was overflowing with beer bottles. "I can handle myself."

"Are you sure?"

"Well, I went up in front of a judge and he agreed with me, so I'm pretty sure."

Mom looked down at her pie. "Okay." She said quietly.

We finished eating, and I stood and took her plate. After washing each of them, I turned and gave her a hug. "I'm gonna head home, I've got some work to catch up on. You'll be alright if I leave?"

She nodded. "I love you."

"I love you too."

I grabbed my keys, and left out the garage door. My car started easily. It was new; I'd just bought it last week. I rolled out of the driveway, waved to my mom through the window, and drove off. My apartment was 10 minutes away.

I parked my car in the parking garage, then took the elevator up to the 7th floor. We lived in the city, so there were a lot of tall apartment complexes like this. I pulled out my keys from my purse and walked down the hallway, stopping at the fourth door.

It was already open.

I stopped, holding the key out, confused. Did I forget to lock it? I shook my head. No, I always locked it...

I pulled out my phone and pre-dialed 911. Then I slowly pushed open the door, one hand hovering over the call button and the other holding the door handle.

No one was there.

I stepped inside cautiously, scanning every part of the two rooms I could see from the doorway. The kitchen was clear. The living room was clear. I closed the door behind me, then crossed the kitchen and grabbed the bat I kept sitting on the wall next to the fridge. I crept forward, looking into each dark corner and behind and under every couch or chair. I made my way into my bedroom, then the bathroom.

I didn't find anyone.

After checking everything three times, I decided I must've left the door unlocked, and then not closed it well enough. I shut off my phone and set the bat down. I'm just being paranoid, I thought to myself.

I went back into the kitchen and pulled a Gatorade from the fridge. I looked around, wary. I still felt uneasy. I pulled out my phone again, and opened up Liam's contact info. I'd been dating Liam for the past two months, he lived in the apartment above me. I pressed call. Maybe calling 911 was too extreme after triple checking the house, but it couldn't hurt to have Liam come down for a bit...

And then I felt something hard hit the back of my head, and everything went black.
