Hiding

I haven't moved for hours. At least, for what feels like hours. My back is killing me and my legs ache... I just want to sit down. But I don't because I can still hear the crunchers moving, looking for me.

Snap.

I've mostly focused on keeping my breathing slow and quiet so that I'm not heard. The green leaves of the stalks have been in my face this whole time, partially blocking my vision. I don't dare move them.

"Kanna? Kanna?"

There's also that sound. The sound of crunchers using their smooth voices, calling out to me.

"Where are you Kanna?"

Each word makes my heart beat just a little bit faster.

Lu, please find me...

⧫ ⧫ ⧫

Lu wipes the blood off on his pants. He looks over at Mr. Smiley, then points to the body on the floor. "Could you clean this up? I've gotta go find her, since your incompetent ass put her in a freaking maze. She's probably all sorts of lost by now." The ice cold hatred in Lu's voice is undisguised as he moves towards the door. Then, he looks back at Toby's lifeless form and frowns. Lu steps towards him, avoiding the puddle of blood growing on the floor. He reaches down and plucks something out of the boy's ear, then tosses on the ground.

And crushes it.

"We don't need Kanna having access to something like that," Lu mumbles to himself.

⧫ ⧫ ⧫

Okay, I have to sit down. Or lay down. Or at least kneel. My knees feel like they're burning from holding my body up for so long.

Snap.

Can I risk it?

Snap.

The sounds around me say no, but my legs are screaming yes.

I listen to my legs.

I crouch down slowly, trying my best not to rustle any of the plants around me. Okay, Kanna. Good so far. Now just shift your leg... I push out my foot.

And then I lose my balance.

I topple over, crashing my head into a stalk.

Snap.

Snap.

All of a sudden, I hear what seems like hundreds of crunchers, all moving towards me.

Shit.

I quickly stand up and burst out of the stalk, just as I see a cruncher leaning in to grab me. My legs are killing me, especially from standing up for that long. I charge forwards, swerving and changing directions as fast as possible.

And then something grabs my arm, and I hear a loud crack! as pain explodes through my shoulder. I trip and fall, screaming as I realize the cruncher is still holding my broken arm. I look up to see it's black teeth opening up. It's jaw almost unhinges, and its entire face is dedicated to its mouth.

Somehow, I rip my arm out of its wet grasp and scramble up again. I charge away, clutching my arm in pain. I can't tell how badly it's injured, but it hurts like hell.

Snap.

Snap.

Tears fly from my face as I keep moving forward. I'm stumbling every so often now. My heart is slamming against my chest so hard that I can feel it pulsing in my ears. My arm won't move anymore. I turn, once again, into some thick corn stalks. It's now or never. I push into my pocket and rip out the healing tablet, stuffing it into my mouth.

And now, I wait.
