I don't know if that flimsy little branch can keep the door open, but I had to hold it open with something, so it'll have to do.
The second Lu screamed, it was like my feet became unglued and every part of my body was filled with fire. I run through the trees, trying to remember what direction Lu and Mr. Smiley went. Vines reach for me, but I jump and swerve and dodge them any way I can. You can't kill me yet... not until I know Lu is safe...
I launch myself over a fallen branch and then freeze. A boy is sitting under a tree a few feet away from me. His head is in his hands, and he's whispering something to himself. His whole body is shaking.
I hear Lu scream again.
I move over to the boy and pull his hands away from his face. "Hey, look at me!"
He looks up. Big, blue eyes meet mine. Tears are streaming down his cheeks.
"Did you see another boy around here?"
He nods.
"What happened to him?"
The boy points up.
I look at the canopy, then back at the boy. Then back up. Then down. Then up.
Are you freaking kidding me?
I grab the boy's hand and run towards the door. I'm relieved to see it's still barely cracked open.
We reach the door and I shove him through. "Stay. I'll be back. No matter how scared you get, do not let this door close, Okay?" I turn and run back the way I came without waiting for an answer.
Slam!
I crash backwards onto the ground and look up to see Lu on the ground across from me. We'd run into each other.
"Wait, you're okay?"
"I won't be for long! Get up, run!" Lu grabs my hand and we charge for the door. Mr. Smiley follows us. I burst through, slamming into the floor as I trip and crash through the open door. The boy is standing on the other side, still holding it open.
Lu and I lay on the floor for a bit, trying to catch our breath.
"How did you get away?" I ask.
"Sir grins-a-lot helped me out," he answered, waving to Mr. Smiley.
"Oh."
I hear the door softly close as the new boy lets go.
Lu stands up and looks him in the face. "Why are you here?" He snarls.
"Lu..." My eyes widen as I watch Lu push up his sleeves.
He shoves the boy into the wall. "There's no reason for you to be here. Why did they send you down?"
The boy's eyes are wide and wet. "I don't know what you're talking about..."
"Don't give me that bullshit, tell me why you're here!"
The boy is shaking, hard. He shuts his eyes and shakes his head, tilting his face down to the floor. "I don't know..."
"Tell me!" Lu screams.
"Stop!" I rush forward and rip Lu off of the boy. "What the hell, Lu? Why are you doing this?"
"He's not supposed to be here!"
"None of us are supposed to be here, Lu..."
"No! You don't understand!" Lu turns around to storm off but waits. He turns back, looking the boy directly in the eye. Then he steps forward and lifts his hand up.
I reach to stop him from hitting the boy. But, he doesn't. He simply pulls something out of the boy's ear.
Lu puts the brand new speaker up close to his mouth. "I see through you. I know what you're up to. And I'm gonna beat you, no matter what you throw at me. Just watch, you filthy witch."
Lu tosses the speaker over his shoulder as he walks away.
