"You're not really convinced about being a Kitsune, are you?"
Link shook his head, not even bothering to try and hide that fact.
Rhett nodded his head in understanding and he pulled up a chair next to Link. "I don't understand what you're going through man, and I'm not about to pacify you by saying 'yeah, I know what you're feeling.' Because I don't and that would be condescending of me. But I hold true to my word that we will find out what you are. This is just the skeleton of the elaborate how that we're trying to build. I can say for certain and with sincerity in my heart that you won't be going through this alone."
Link nodded his head, appreciating that Rhett had come downstairs. He always knew the right words to say, and he could tell that he was being sincere from the look in his green eyes.
"Thanks brother," Link said, and Rhett placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"That's what we do man. Let's try to get some sleep though, alright?"
Link shrugged as Rhett rose and began leading him toward the stairs.
"I have a feeling that I can't shake," Link said, causing Rhett to pause mid step.
"What kind of feeling?" He asked hesitantly.
"I honestly don't know how to describe it," Link said, his voice sounding distant.
The three kids paused in front of the high school, looking at it with awe in their eyes. They exchanged glances before the three of them trailed up the stairs. The stairs were slightly uneven and they had to use the railing to steady themselves. They arrived at the set of blue double doors and Lily reached forward, taking the handle into her hand. She turned it, the door creaking open without protest. She turned her head to look at the boys with a question lurking in her eyes.
"Okay. Isn't the school supposed to be locked at night?"
Locke and Lincoln shrugged and they proceeded inward. The moment Lily stepped in, she felt a shiver trail through her spine and pass through her feet. The tightness like something heavy was resting on her chest returned, and she brought her hand up to her chest as she stared down the long dark corridor. It was the same feeling she had felt when she was in her bedroom. Lincoln began marching ahead with the flashlight held in his hands while Locke stayed behind, taking Lily gently by the arm.
"You feeling okay Lil?" He asked, craning his neck to look into her eyes. She had her head lowered as she stared at her feet. She raised her head and he backed up a few paces, their faces several inches apart.
"Yeah! I'm fine! Why would you think something's wrong?" She questioned.
Locke raised an eyebrow. "Oh I don't know. You're standing there with your hand over your heart like you're having a heart attack or something."
"That's what it feels like," Lily said under her breath as she began walking. Locke moved to catch up with her.
"Wait, what was that?"
"Nothing Locke," she called over her shoulder as she followed her brother down the corridor. They took a left and found themselves in the technology wing.
"I think the wood lab should be somewhere over here," Lincoln called out, his voice carrying through the empty hall. It bounced off of the lockers.
Locke shivered. "That wasn't creepy or anything," he mused, pulling his backpack strap tighter over his shoulder as he stalked after Lincoln.
Lily looked over her shoulder as she turned to head down the wing, catching something dart past the furthest hall out of her peripheral. Her eyes widened and she scampered to catch up to the boys.
They stopped in front of a large wooden door, Lincoln rattling the handle. "Convenient. This door is locked," he said with a groan. Locke gently pushed Lincoln out of the way and punched a hole through the small glass window.
The glass shattered and Lily screamed as she jumped backward, her hands covering her mouth. Locke threw his arm in and finessed for the lock on the other side of the door, triggering it. The door clicked open and he gestured for them to enter.
Lincoln was staring at Locke's bleeding knuckles. "Dude... You're bleeding."
"Not only are you bleeding, but you damaged school property! We're gonna get in so much trouble," Lily screeched.
Locke shrugged. "They can't prove that it was me. Or any of us. Are we gonna do this or not?"
Lincoln and Lily looked at each other before following Locke into the wood shop. Locke reached for the light switch but Lily had caught him by the wrist, shaking her head.
"We can't turn any of the lights on. Any people driving by will see that we're in here and then we'd get caught for sure."
Locke made a face as if her logic made sense and they meandered toward the middle wooden table. They took a seat on three stools as they began pooling all of the supplies that they had divided up between their bags onto the table. When Lily had finished emptying her bag, she rose from her seat and the boys looked up at her.
"What are you doing?" Lincoln asked, and Lily gave him a look with her hands on her hips.
"Well somebody has to go to the science lab and mix up some phosphorescent powder, and it surely isn't going to be either of you two. You guys design the weapons while I go and do that," she said as she turned on her heel.
Locke spun in his seat. "Lily!"
Lily turned to look at Locke, and he smiled.
"Be careful," he said, and Lincoln snickered, nudging Locke's ribs with his elbow. Lily smiled back and opened the door, sneaking out into the hall. She wanted time alone away from the boys to think anyway, so it would be better if they separated.
