"You did this to me!" He shrieked, his eyes wild and crazy. There was a maniac trapped in there. Lily was crying, and Locke and Lincoln were cowering on the ground with their arms held over their heads. Link tried to push himself off of the ground, but to no avail, his leg seizing up immediately. He just dropped himself back onto the ground and held his arm out in front of him with an open hand.

"No!" He screamed, the scream seeming to carry on for several minutes. Ponytail dropped Lily and she fell to the ground, and he doubled over and covered his ears screaming. That's when Link saw the fox that he had heard when he was downstairs leap out from between Locke and Lincoln, and it pounced right onto Ponytail's back, sinking its teeth into his neck. He cried out again and dropped to his knees, and the fox released, taking off in a sprint down the opposite end of the hall. Ponytail held his hand up to the back of his neck and then pulled it away to look at the blood, rage in his eyes. He jumped to his feet, shot a glare at Link, and then disappeared out the window. Link dropped his hand with his mouth hanging open, all three of the kids snapping their heads in his direction with wide eyes.

Rhett became increasingly frustrated as he drove all over creation looking for Jessie. He checked in the local supermarkets, super stores, gas stations, parks, dark alleyways, you name it. The last option to cross his mind was to head to the police station to file a missing person's report. There was just no way Rhett was going to give up on finding her, and that's where he went next. Rhett tried Jessie's cell for what felt like the millionth time and it still went directly to voicemail. His heart sank further and further as he gripped the steering wheel. He sucked his bottom lip into his mouth, shaking his head. Nothing seemed to be going his way lately. Rhett's phone began ringing and he excitedly picked it up while stopped at a red light, feeling crestfallen when he realized it was only Link.

"Yeah buddy," Rhett answered halfheartedly, not feeling well enough to even pretend to be peppy.

"I've got the kids. Something really weird happened here, man."

"Like what?"

"There was a fox in the school. It seemed like it was protecting the kids from the Alpha."

"Hold on. The Alpha was at the school also?"

"Yeah, and he nearly killed Lily. Again. This guy is really starting to piss me off."

"You and me both," Rhett said through his teeth as he thought of the possibility that Ponytail could have taken Jessie.

"Any luck on Jessie?"

Rhett was silent for a few minutes, clenching his jaw.

"Unfortunately not. I'm about to head to the police station if I don't find her soon," he said, unable to help the helplessness that crept into his throat.

"Maybe we're overthinking things and she just went out for a walk or something. She's been under a lot of stress lately also, brother. It's gonna be okay."

"I sure hope so." Rhett had to focus on driving again, feeling his heart pound painfully in his chest.

After putting the children to bed, the adults saw Baker to his vehicle and went back to bed themselves. It was roughly three in the morning and they decided a little sleep was better than none, and the silent night trudged on. Rhett lay in his bed restless, staring at the ceiling with tired eyes. It wasn't easy to fall asleep without his companion by his side. His thoughts consumed him and dragged him down deep into his dark subconscious, sleep evading him once again. Link found it relatively easy to fall back to sleep, which wasn't out of the normal for him.

Link opened his eyes and yawned, turning his head to look at the clock. He had only slept an hour, which he figured was going to happen since he was so wound from recent events. He threw the covers off of him, trudged to the bathroom, took a quick shower and dressed, then headed down the stairs. He poured himself a heaping bowl of frosted mini wheats and ate while drinking coffee, checking through his social media on his phone. It was quiet in the house which he questioned, but he didn't spend too much time on it. He was okay with the quiet for a change. After finishing his cereal, he washed his bowl in the sink and snatched his keys off of the hook. He went outside and it was still dark, but he felt like everything was going to be okay. He found himself ducking into the car and taking off toward the freeway, hopping on and traveling to wherever he was going. He had no idea where he was going, but he understood that sometimes you just needed a drive to the middle of nowhere without question.
