"I already told you," Link grunted, raising his head and baring his teeth. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
The man's nostrils flared and he made a signal with his hand, rising to his feet. Link's eyes widened with horror as he feared he was about to witness a massacre of everyone that he loved, but surprisingly they were all released. As the men were heading toward the exit, the one that held onto him glanced over at him before stepping out.
"We will find him, and we will kill you if you get in the way," he said, then he opened the door following the rest of the men outside. Dust flew in and everyone covered their heads with their arms as the building was swarming with sand. They couldn't do anything but wait for the storm to pass, and Link took the moment to seriously ponder. Who were these guys, where did they come from, who was the new Alpha that they spoke of, and why did they want him? Link thought Teegan was the only Alpha. His head began to swim, his thoughts drowning out the cries of the children.
The world just turned into a more terrifying place times a million on the face of existence, and he didn't want to live on it anymore. He slowly lowered his arms and was grateful to see that the wind had stopped howling, and the sand had stopped flying, which made him think... What if those men had control of that sand storm? Link lowered his shirt around his neck to suck in some fresh air and pushed himself to his feet, wandering outside and looking at the gravel around him. There was no indication of footprints or anything of the sort.
Great, they were dealing with a new set of supernatural creatures, because that was exactly what they needed. Link brought his palm up to his forehead as he looked at the vehicles, bathed completely in sand. He turned on his heel to go back inside, greeted by Alex and Mike, then Morgan and Drew. Their eyes were widened with shock and alarm, yet their faces held a twinge of excitement and thrill. Link literally felt the urge in his hand to slap it off of their faces.
"Who the hell were they," Morgan asked, pointing outside at nothing in particular.
"Scarlhellions. They're a group of desert people derivative of the west coast. This group in particular are trained assassins, and I honestly feel horrible for the new Alpha they're looking for."
Morgan and Link turned to each other with shock etched in their features before looking at Drew incredulously.
"Do I dare ask how you know all this?" Alex asked from behind him, leaning against the doorframe with a tired look in his eyes.
"I've had a run in with them before. They may look human, but I can assure you they're not. When I first discovered my powers, I had one of these guys show up at my house in the middle of the night to warm me that if I accidentally harmed or killed somebody, they would kill me."
"Holy crap! But why? Who do they think they are?" Link demanded, his eyebrows furrowing.
"They call themselves protectors, but only if it benefits them. They're really demons and they don't want any other supernaturals having a higher kill rate or status than them," Drew looked between the men. "If you break apart their name, Scarlet Hellion, it also means red demon."
Link's face flushed.
"An Alpha werewolf is pretty high status in their book. So somebody from the west coast other than Teegan is an Alpha."
"Which means bad news for us," Mike chimed in rather glumly, cramming his hands into his pockets and lowering his head.
"But who?" Morgan asked, scratching the back of his head with an eyebrow arched. Link stared off into space before glancing at the vehicles again. A tight feeling nestled into the pit of his chest, gripping his core and shaking it up. Jackson approached them, huffing out of his nostrils rather impatiently.
"Hey, we better get going as soon as possible. Last time I checked, Link predicted that Rhett was going to die and we still have several hours of driving ahead of us."
