"My momma always told me that boys and books don't mix. I believed her but I still wanted both. I wanted boys and I wanted to keep my books."

A gust of wind blew mightily, sweeping along with it dirt, leaves and the tears of a young teenage girl. Ifeoma stood on the steps leading to her father's house. She was saying goodbye to all the things she loved most. All the things she had known all her life.

Her hands curled firmly around a beaded bracelet she got from her best friend Njideka. Deep within her, she was happy to be leaving at last, but it still hurt. In fact it hurt her so much more than she could ever admit.

"Ify!"her older sister called her from inside the house.

"Ma!" she answered quickly while cleaning away her tears and flew inside to find out why she was being called.

"Ifeoma where have you been ehn? Did you want Nne to go and be looking for you? She has been inside waiting. Oya go and meet her now." Ify nodded and dashed into her mother's room.

Adaobi stood at the door watching her. She wondered how her little sister had grown so quickly in such little time. How many years had it been? Four years? Five years maybe? It had only been five years since she got married to her husband and left for the city. They now had a daughter and a son and were living fine far away from the village with her as a teacher in training and her husband as an engineer.

Now her once so little sister was leaving for the city with their aunt. It was still like a dream to her. She couldn't believe she had grown so fast. Not that she wasn't happy but she knew what she was truly afraid of. The world was not a pretty place the way Ifeoma thought it was. It was a nasty place, a place where children were led astray and this was what scared her most. She didn't want her sister's innocent mind to be corrupted. She wanted her to grow up as innocent as she was right now. Little did she know how wrong she was.

"Nnem." Ify called out to her mom who sat quietly in the room she shared with her father.

"Ify baby." her mom smiled at her happily. She was proud of her beautiful daughter. She reached out to pull her into an embrace. "Chukwu gozie." her wrinkled hands wrapped around her beloved daughter. The baby of the house.

"Ifeoma," her aunty started, "You have grown very taller. You are now a big girl. Very soon, before you know it, you will become ripe for marriage and we will now come to collect bride price." Ifeoma said nothing but only smiled at her. She wondered what was with her relatives and marriage. They were so eager to marry her sister off to a rich man and now they were talking about her own marriage.
