It's a surprise." He grinned at her.
"Alright then. It's a good thing I love surprises."
"Of course it is. Now let us be going" Jeffery said while Ifeoma laughed at the twisted English he spoke.
"Ring road! Ring road!" Jeffery called as a red bus with yellow stripes zoomed past them only to stop a few metres away. "Come on Ify." Jeffery said as he knitted his fingers tightly with her's.
He didn't want her getting lost and only God knew if she had taken the bus before. She had told him she came from Delta state but he hadn't gotten the time to ask her the exact place yet.
"Bros na only one chance dey o. One chance! One chance!" The conductor warned as soon as Jeffery and Ifeoma got to the bus.
Jeffery looked at Ifeoma, then at himself. Buses going to ring road were hard to find when it was getting late and this bus was going to be one of the last few. This Jeffery knew.
"We'll take it." Jeffery replied certainly while Ifeoma looked at him like he was some kind of crazy person.
"Are you serious Jeffery? It's just one seat."
"I know." Jeffery got on the bus still holding Ifeoma's hand and trying to ignore her protests and complaints. "Come here." He said at last when he was sure his ears were already bleeding and her strength was totally exhausted.
"Where am I going to sit?"
"On my laps."
"What!?" She exclaimed but was forced to keep silent as soon as Jeffery pulled her into his laps.
"You are so in trouble when we get off the bus."
"I know." He whispered. "That's why I'm going to make the most of the moments I have with you sitting on my laps."
"That's not right and you know that." Ifeoma retorted, but Jeffery pretended not to hear.
It was easy to notice; Jeffery feigned total innocence while Ifeoma fumed past conciliation.
In Ifeoma's own view, the Sun was shining, the day was bright, the sky was blue and Jeffery was going to get his ass beat as soon as they got down from the bus.
"Oya everybody come down. We dey ring road now. Sharp, sharp. Sharp, sharp. We nor get time to waste."
As soon as their feet touched the ground, the bus took off leaving behind a cloud of dust while Ifeoma faced an unknown direction too. She didn't care where she was going, as long as it was far away from Jeffery.
